Tigers Notebook: Tigers closer Jose Valverde puts Friday collapse in rearview.
from the detnews

Valverde just 12 saves shy of becoming the fifth pitcher in Tigers history to register 100 saves with the club.
And he's converted 93.6 percent (88-of-94) of his save opportunities since 2010.
"I put it away and keep going," Valverde said of flak he's received from fans when he blows a save. "Take what you like and throw the rest away."

Miguel Cabrera is batting .349 (51-for-146) with 14 doubles, seven home runs and 31 RBIs over his last 35 games.

? Jackson collected four walks, matching a career high. The last time was July 6, 2011 against the Angels.

? Tigers pitcher Doug Fister has posted a 1.20 ERA (52.1 innings, seven earned runs) since he joined the Tigers on July 30, 2011.

Avila heading out on rehab assignment with Hens.
The rehab assignment is set for catcher Alex Avila, who will become a Toledo Mud Hens for a few days starting Monday night. He’s scheduled to catch five innings Monday and Tuesday night, then serve as the designated hitter on Wednesday. If all goes well, he’ll rejoin the Tigers in time for Thursday’s matinee against the Cardinals.

Leyland gives Raburn day off for finale.
The Tigers' matchup with Rockies right-hander Jeremy Guthrie earned Ryan Raburn Sunday's game off after three consecutive starts.
Raburn's 4-for-11 performance with two doubles in those games earned some questions as to whether he might finally be hitting the groove the Tigers have been waiting for.
The answer from manager Jim Leyland sounded hopeful, but far from definitive.

"He's better, more relaxed," Leyland said. "I mean, he's not home free yet, but he's better. I have to just play him right."

That means not putting Raburn into spots where he could struggle. If he heats up at the plate and goes on a midseason tear, as he has the last few years, he'll be playing quite a bit, but Leyland won't be doing that just to do it.

"If he gets like he did the second half [last year], he'll be in the lineup," Leyland said. "I'm talking about just trying to get him going, I probably shouldn't have done that. I probably screwed that up."

The Tigers will face three right-handed starters in their upcoming series against the Cardinals.

Avila to begin rehab assignment Monday.
The Tigers finalized their plans to send out catcher Alex Avila on a rehab assignment. He'll play three straight games with Triple-A Toledo starting Monday in hopes of being activated from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday.

Avila, who went on the DL a week and a half ago with a strained right hamstring, is scheduled to catch five innings for the Mud Hens on Monday and Thursday, then play at DH on Wednesday.

The Hens are at home all three days, so assuming he feels fine after that, Avila will be able to join the Tigers for their homestand finale Thursday afternoon against the Cardinals.

The catcher's return would come just in time for a marathon stretch of games for the Tigers, who play 20 games in 20 days before the All-Star break. Gerald Laird has been getting the majority of starts behind the plate in Avila's absence, but rookie Bryan Holaday started the last two games against Rockies left-handers Jeff Francis and Christian Friedrich.

Detroit Tigers' Max Scherzer strikes out 12, shuts out Colorado Rockies in 5-0 win.
from Mlive

Scherzer entered Sunday having only pitched more than six innings in three of his 13 starts. His outing was the deepest he's pitched since July 16, 2011.

Cabrera's RBI double in the sixth gave Detroit a decisive five-run lead and gave the reigning AL batting champion his 32nd RBI in the past 35 games.

Tigers 5 - Rockies 0 : Max Scherzer fans 12, Quintin Berry has five hits in Tiger triumph.
from the detnews

All five of Berry's hits were singles, raising his batting average to .333. It was the first five-hit game for a Tiger since Brennan Boesch at Texas on June 6 of last year ? and the first at home since Austin Jackson on April 30, 2010 against the Angels.
But it was only the fifth five-hit performance by a Tiger at Comerica Park since it opened in 2000.

Before going 4-5 last year, they were 37-8 at home in interleague play since Leyland took over as manager.
