Doug Fister fans six over six shutout innings of work to earn the win in his first start since returning from the disabled list.

from the Tigers official site

Tigers even series w/ Rockies w/ 4-1 win. Fister 6 scoreless innings in return from DL, Cabrera cirles bases twice...in very different ways.

Cabrera got scoring started in 1st with 14th HR - deep drive to RCF. Then in the 5th, he hit a GB to pitcher Friedrich, and the fun began......ball went off Friedrich's glove, he picked it up & threw wildly to 1B...Cabrera went to 3B, another wild throw scored him to make it 3-0.

Fister looked like he did in his 10GS for Tigers last yr - very efficient, every pitch with movement, lots of easy outs. 6IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB/6K.

Coke worked 2 scoreless innings (now 3ER last 15.1IP with 4BB/16K), Benoit finished - gave up run (w/ 2 more Ks) in 9th...

other Tigers RBIs belonged to Jackson (bases loaded walk) and Fielder (sac Fly). Jackson walked 4 times for 2nd time in career....

Jackson walks (now tied w/ Fielder for team lead - 27) one of his big improvements this yr - BB rate has jumped to 14% from 8% last year...

Jackson's K rate has fallen from 27% to 18.7%, which is exactly the league avg...avg.walk rate is 8.3%

Tigers now have chance to win 3 straight series for first time this year...Guthrie starts for Rockies. Has 6.91ERA, but he's tough on Tigers.
Guthrie has career 3.91ERA vs. Tigers in 10G/7GS...Tigers did score 10ER in 11.2IP when they faced him in Os uniform in 2G last year...

Fister: "It’s definitely a step in the right direction. Felt no pain, no discomfort today, so it was a good day overall."
Laird on Fister: "He looked good. It was nice to see him get in a groove early, kind of get his confidence going".

Leyland: "If We get Ricky and Scherzer going consistently with the big guy and then Fister coming in, that would be a big help for us".

also encouraging news from Jason Beck....
Good day of work for Alex Avila Saturday. If he can repeat it Sunday, he could go on rehab assignment with MudHens as soon as Monday.
Three games of rehab at Toledo could allow Avila to be ready for Thursday, the first day he's eligible to come off 15-day DL.

Leyland: "I think Alex is going to go out very shortly. That's good news. Dirks is probably going to be a little while".

Leyland: "It wasn't like we were playing great when we had everybody healthy. If you get them back and you don't do something, shame on us".

Fister on Tigers defense: "It speaks for itself. I mean, we?ve got guys on the OF, guys on the IF that are making spectacular plays."

Fister on Tigers defense: "I mean, Miggy laying it out there at third, guys coming off the wall in left, Raburn, making catches."

Fister on Tigers defense: "I mean, that?s the type of team win that we would like to bring along and have."

Fister on Tigers defense: "All cylinders are clicking, whether it?s defense or offense. That?s the kind of the momentum we want to have."

June 17 in Tigers and mlb history:

1958 - Ozzie Virgil, who became the first black man to play for the Detroit Tigers 11 days earlier, goes 5 for 5 in his first home game at Briggs Stadium. The Dominican's performance helps Detroit beat the Washington Senators, 9 - 2.

1967 - A nine-hour and five-minute doubleheader between the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Athletics sets a major league record for the longest ever. The first game includes a rain delay, and the second goes 19 innings before a Dave Duncan home run gives the Athletics a 6 - 5 victory. Detroit wins the opener 7 - 6.

1993: Baseball owners voted overwhelmingly, 26-2, in favor of expanding the playoffs for the first time since 1969. The new system, which will begin in 1994, will double the number of teams that qualify for the postseason to eight by realigning each league to three divisions, with two teams qualifying as wild cards.

1993: the Detroit Tigers hit five home runs, including a pair each by Travis Fryman and Dan Gladden, in a 9 - 5 win over the Cleveland Indians. Fryman, Gladden, and Carlos Baerga of the Cleveland Indians also tie an American League record for three players with two or more home runs in a nine-inning game.
