Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Dirks not yet ready for baseball activities.
Andy Dirks will spend at least another week in a walking boot while receiving shockwave therapy on his strained right Achilles. The outfielder, who hasn't played since May 30, was examined by Tigers foot/ankle specialist Dr. Chris Zingas on Friday in Detroit.

"He's not right. He's not ready to start any baseball activities," manager Jim Leyland said. "We were hoping for that. We didn't get it."

The examination showed improvement, but still some discomfort, Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said.

"He's much improved," Rand said, "but still has point tenderness there. So he's going to continue to be in the boot for another week, and he'll also receive shockwave therapy."

The delay seemingly would push any timetable for a Dirks return past the All-Star break. While he was cleared to start running on a special treadmill, that's about the extent of his physical activity. He'll begin a more full-fledged running program once he's cleared.

Leyland not afraid to give green light on 3-0 count

ST. PETERSBURG -- Jim Leyland has said numerous times over the past two seasons that he has given more green lights for Tigers hitters to swing on 3-0 counts than he did at his previous stops in Pittsburgh, Florida and Colorado. On Thursday, Brennan Boesch was one of them.

It didn't work. Boesch flew out to center on James Shields' 3-0 pitch with runners on first and second for the second out of the second inning. The intent was to get Boesch to swing at a sure strike instead of chasing, one reason Leyland has given green lights to many slumping hitters on 3-0.

"I let Boesch hit, tried to give him a little confidence," Leyland said. "There's a lot of different schools of thought. Boeschy just missed it, too. He just didn't quite get it out far enough, but he hit it good."

Not many hitters like swinging on 3-0 counts, Leyland said, because they don't want to get caught chasing a pitch out of the strike zone and turning down a walk.

The Tigers have put just three balls in play on 3-0 counts this season, good for an RBI double and a couple of outs. The double actually came from Boesch.

Miguel Cabrera needs four hits to become the seventh Tiger to total 100 hits, 15 home runs and 60 RBIs before the All-Star break. He also did it two years ago. Others include Hank Greenberg in 1935, Al Kaline in 1955, Norm Cash in 1961, Willie Horton in 1970 and Magglio Ordonez in 2006.

Austin Jackson's caught stealing in the fourth inning Friday marked his second in six days. He has been thrown out on consecutive steal attempts for the first time since April 2011.

Justin Verlander's eight strikeouts Friday moved him to 121, ahead of teammate Max Scherzer (114) for the American League lead, and past Washington's Stephen Strasburg (118) for tops in the Majors.

Delmon Young has multiple hits in each of his last three games, going 6-for-13 in that stretch.

June 30 in Tigers history:

1917: The Tigers split with the host Browns, losing the opener before winning, 5 - 3. Ty Cobb warms up in the first game with two hits, then clocks an opposite field grand slam and a triple in the second game. The slam clears the LF bleachers.

1927: The Tigers edge the Indians, 6 - 5, beating George Uhle for the 5th time this year.

1931: The Athletics buy veteran Waite Hoyt from Detroit.

1934: In a 4 - 3, 10-inning loss to the Browns, Tiger CF Gee Walker is picked off base twice in the same frame, earning him a 10-day suspension for his ineptitude. After Hank Greenberg singles, Walker reaches base on a error, but then gets caught off base when C Rollie Hemsley fires to first base. Greenberg attempts to draw a throw by running to third base and is thrown out, with Walker taking second. Moments later, with Walker standing six feet off the bag "as brave as a boy on a burning deck" (writer Charles P. Ward's description), pitcher Jack Knott's throw to SS Alan Strange nabs him. Mickey Cochrane is so furious he suspends Walker and fines him $20 - the 6th time this season that he has earned a $20 fine. Gee's next appearance won't come until July 16 when he pinch-hits for Cochrane.

1935: At St. Louis, leadoff hitter Pete Fox leads the Tigers to a twinbill drubbing of the Browns, as Detroit rolls, 18 - 1 and 11 - 6. Fox drives in 10 runs, six in the opener when he hits his second grand slam of the month. Fox has eight hits, five in the nitecap, and scores four runs in each game. Schoolboy Rowe coasts in the opener and Alvin Crowder is the nitecap winner.

1960: At Fenway Park, SS Don Buddin pulls some fancy footwork to lead the BoSox to a win against the Tigers. With the score tied in the 8th, Buddin is caught in a rundown between third base and home, but he eludes Detroit catcher Red Wilson to score. Wilson argues that Buddin left the base line, and earns an ejection by Red Flaherty for his views. The Red Sox score three more runs and win, 11 - 7. Ted Williams has a home run, off Jim Bunning, and Rocky Colavito answers with two homers.

1997: Bobby Higginson belts three home runs and drives in seven runs and Justin Thompson allows four hits in eight innings as Detroit kicks the Mets, 14 - 0. It is the most lopsided shutout in Mets history. Detroit hits more homers (6) than the Mets have hits (5), and it is the most home runs given up by Mets' pitchers since April 29, 1978.

2004 - For the third straight game, the Tigers win thanks to walk-off home run. Following the lead of teammates Eric Munson and Carlos Pena in the two previous games, Dmitri Young hits a two-run dinger in the 11th inning to beat the Indians 9 - 7.
