The Tigers outrighted Matt Young to Triple-A Toledo, the team announced. Detroit designated the utility player for assignment two days ago. He has spent most of the season at Triple-A Toledo, where he has played second base, center field and right field and posted a .251/.410/.342 batting line in 258 plate appearances.

Tigers split series w/ Twins - score 5 in 8th, rally for 7-3 win. Fielder 3-run HR deep to RF breaks 3-3 tie, Tigers bullpen does job again.

It was all Twins early - they had 13 baserunners in the first 4 innings, but just a 3-0 lead. Tigers defense was big in the early innings.

With one out, Cabrera threw speedster Mastroianni out at the plate on soft GB to 3B - perfect throw, Laird with perfect block at home...

Then, on very next play, Span singled to LF...Raburn charged, fielded, and - with perfect throw - cut down Dozier trying to score from 2nd.

With bases loaded in 4th, Downs on for Porcello, Cabrera made nice grab of Morneau line drive with two outs to keep score 3-0.

Going to bottom of 4th, Tigers had been out-hit, 12-0. Jackson doubled in 4th, then Cabrera single brought him home to make it 3-1.

Then in 5th, Boesch doubled to base of the wall in LCF to bring in Peralta to make it 3-2. Meanwhile, Downs was dealing...

Making just 2nd appearance in ML, Downs gave up just 1H in 3IP, 0R, 0BB - and struck out five...huge innings to keep Tigers in the game...

Tigers were still down 3-2 in 8th...Gardenhire went to Burnett, who had allowed 4H and 0R in last 16IP back to late May...

Jackson started winning rally with triple down RF line...Berry (PH) walked on 3-2 pitch, then Cabrera tied game with sharp single thru box.

Gardenhire then brought LH Robertson to face Fielder - and on a 1-0 pitch, he launched mammoth 3-run HR to RF to make it 6-3 Tigers.

Young followed with a video-review HR to RF to cap off 5-run rally. Valverde then closed it out. Dotel gets win by going 1.1IP in 7th/8th.

3-run HR for Fielder was his 13th HR, just his 2nd w/ a man on base. Cabrera finishes 2-4 w/ 2RBI, was 8-14 in series, 8RBI - now has 70RBI.

Jackson double and triple give him this line thru 83G: .332/.412/.559 - 3rd in batting race, 2nd in OBP, 7th in SLG in AL.

Tigers now 41-42, still 4.5G behind W. Sox, who swept Rangers with 2-1 win today....Tigers now get ready for 3 with KC starting tom. night.

Matchups for KC: Smyly vs. Sanchez (6.80ERA), Fister vs. Chen (4.83ERA, tough on Tigers) and Scherzer vs. Teaford. On air friday night at 6:40pm

Leyland: Downs' relief key to comeback win.
Tigers reliever Darin Downs wasn't in the clubhouse Thursday after the Tigers' 7-3, come-from-behind win against the Twins to talk about his performance. But his teammates weren't short on praise, starting with the skipper.

"He threw the ball all over the plate, threw the breaking ball all over the plate, changed speeds, good curveball, good cutter. He was very impressive," said manager Jim Leyland following Downs' three innings of scoreless relief. "To me, obviously at the end, the [offense was] huge for us, I certainly don't want to downplay that, but to me with the shape our bullpen way in today, Downs was the key to the game."

Downs, who was called up from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, took over after a line drive by Jamey Carroll hit Rick Porcello in the right biceps, hastening the Tigers starter's exit from the game. Porcello's day wasn't going too hot anyway, allowing 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings before getting hooked with the bases loaded.

Duane Below remained unavailable because of his 60-pitch start Tuesday, Phil Coke was sent home sick Thursday morning, and Leyland didn't want to use Brayan Villarreal unless absolutely necessary. So the team needed an innings eater to keep the game within reach.

In his second-career Major League game, the 27-year-old got out of the fourth-inning jam and completed three innings of one-hit ball while striking out five of the 10 batters he faced.

"He came out and really proved himself today," outfielder Quintin Berry said. "He really was a big part in this win, and we were short-staffed in the 'pen. So for him to come out and go that many innings, that's huge, man. Good for him. I'm proud of him."

When Downs took the mound, the Tigers were being out-hit, 12-0, and were down, 3-0 on the scoreboard. The Twins were threatening for more but the rookie left-hander needed only one pitch to retire first baseman Justin Morneau in the bases-loaded situation.

He returned in the fifth to record two quick outs before shortstop Brian Dozier knocked a bloop single just out of the reach of second baseman Ramon Santiago. Dozier stole second, but a lineout by Carroll ended the inning.

Downs finished the day striking out four of the last five hitters, including a former American League Most Valuable Player and three-time AL batting champion in catcher Joe Mauer.

"He made my day easy," catcher Gerald Laird said. "He was throwing everything for a strike, getting ahead of the hitters, and when I asked him for it down and away or down in the dirt, he was making the pitch. It was fun to be back there with him. He did a great job for the first time working with him. The kid's got some talent."
