Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Upside of this deal for the Tigers is that they fill two needs (2B, SP), didn't give up Castellanos and have two 2013 picks in top 35 for now.

Tigers confirm trade on conference call: Infante, Sanchez to Detroit. Turner, Brantly, Brian Flynn to FL. Swap compensation picks.

Dombrowski - "Infante adds offensively, defensively, one of better 2B in baseball".

DD: We felt that we were in a spot where we felt we wanted to address a couple spots in particular.

DD: Said could have acquired Infante, then gone after a starter later, but felt this was best way to go.

DD: Had talked to Fla. a while ago, expressed interest in fixing 2B. Fla. wasn't sure what it was going to do. Beinfest contacted DD Friday.

DD: Comfortable with C depth still, notes that Avila is still young. He and Brantly are both LHH, and would be unlikely to have both.

DD: Like that Infante is signed through 2013, and he's still young enough (30) that they can consider future. Like him a lot.

DD on other teams trying to get Castellanos: Very badly. ... It would've taken a great deal. Never discussed on Tigers' end.

Anibal Sanchez will wear number 19, Omar Infante will wear number 18.

DD: It's a plus that Infante is versatile, can hit in different spots in the lineup for Tigers.

DD on Turner's start yesterday: "They had already proposed it before that. ... They've always shown indications that they liked Jacob."

Is Sanchez purely a rental? or do you see the Tigers signing him for a 3-4 year deal? Very real chance they extend him.

DD: It was an interesting exercise in trading draft choices, and for us, we picked up a No. 1 draft pick.

Dombrowski on further Tigers deals: "We're set at this point."

Trade was typical Dombrowski: Aggression matched with patience. Hung on to the gold-star prospect Castellanos. Dealt from depth. Got help.

Dombrowski knew Tigers were going nowhere in Oct. minus a steady 2B. Smyly injury made a 5th starter essential. Needs identifed. Deal done.

Lots of GMs have favorite trade partners. Few are as predictable as Dombrowski when it comes to dealing with teams he's comfortable with.

Tigers did with this trade what they did a year ago: Traded good, but expendable, minor-leaguers for immediate, quality help. Smart dealing.

Tigers one of few organizations with surplus, quality catchers. Emphasize drafting pitchers because of game and trade value. Hard to argue.

Tigers also managed to jump one draft-round (from back of second to back of first) by swapping picks, which will be bigger news next June.

Marlins did fine. Brantly will be a solid, everyday, LH-hitting catcher. Turner should pitch 200-innings for years. Flynn has a chance.

Marlins also knew what too many fans dismissed after last Tuesday: Turner is a quality RH prospect. Three years out of high school.

Fans expect their team to give up garbage and get gold in return. MLB realities are: You give talent. You get it back. Detroit-Miami's proof.

Brantly was headed somewhere in 2012. Only question was: trade deadline, or Winter Meetings? Avila's in place, McCann and others behind him.

Tigers concluded Turner, Brantly, Flynn were all replaceable. Present needs dictate you trade replaceable talent for immediate needs.

Tigers retool with Infante and Sanchez.
from fangraphs

Nice.

The 28-year-old starter spent June with an ERA over seven, and given the fact that he once had shoulder surgery, it might have made sense to worry about his durability some. On the other hand, Sanchez has been playing with the same (slightly lower) velocity all season, and even recently saw an uptick in fastball gas. And if you look at the season as a whole, he?s put up his third-stright season with an FIP under 3.5 by consistently improving his control while still seeing average ground-ball rates and above-average swinging strike stuff. He looks healthy and is a good pitcher. He could be worth a two-win swing himself.

Sanchez is #6 in WAR among NL pitchers the last three seasons and assuming he?ll re-sign pretty quickly given the Venezuelan connections in Detroit. That rotation is scary, 6 SP with xFIPs under 3.88.

Leyland: Omar Infante will hit second against left-handed pitching.

Love infante with detroit..once again dave dombrowski agressive..and intelligent.

Challenge of this deal, to me: Sanchez either leaves in 3 months, or signs for $10M plus per year. Either way, very steep price to pay.

Latest TigsTown rankings, Turner #2, Brantly #3, Flynn #27. Tigers improve big club and the pick next June is easily a Top 10 guy this time next year.

Lots to like with the deal. Infante is a huge upgrade. Sanchez provides extra stability. Turner's stock is falling fast. Brantly is redundant...

Tigers entered day last in MLB in OPS by 2nd basemen (.562). Infante has a .754 OPS this season.

Tigers dropped Kelvin De La Cruz, Double A pitcher, from their 40-man. Player on the 25-man has to go tomorrow . Raburn, most likely.

Worth definitely expendable, and guards against having to DFA Raburn. But IF flexibility can make Worth valuable. Interesting debate there.

& raburn Both play OF/IF. Raburn offers pop. Kelly better glove. Raburn better arm. does it even matter?

Kelly too versatile as a defender to chop. Santiago too vital in a pinch at 2B and SS. Worth has the option, which is a safer move.

Order in which Leyland uses Sanchez, Porcello is irrelevant when they'll pitch 24 hours apart. That's what separates them today: 24 hours.

Worth buys time for Raburn until Dirks returns, at which point Raburn, unless he finds his 2nd-half octane, is probably squeezed.

Ryan Raburn still has an option left. He just has to accept the assignment.
