August 5 in Tigers and mlb history:

1929 - Despite three triples by Charlie Gehringer, the Senators overwhelm the Tigers 21 - 5. Sam Rice and Buddy Myer each have four hits and four runs as every hitter in the lineup hits a safety.

1931 - Detroit P Tommy Bridges has a brush with baseball immortality when he retires the first 26 Washington Senators to face him, before surrendering a hit to pinch hitter Dave Harris. The Tigers win the game 13 - 0. Charlie Gehringer has 4 hits with 2 rbi, CF John Stone and RF Earl Webb have 2 hits each and 5 RBI between them. But Tommy Bridges also with 2 hits and rbi, is the pitching star here as he also struck out 7 senators.

1942 - White Sox 1B Don Kolloway's 2-out steal of home in the 5th inning is the only run of the game against Tiger lefty Hal Newhouser. Sore-armed Thornton Lee is the winner. There are seven games played today, and five end in shutouts.

1959 - Mickey Mantle breaks up a scoreless pitching duel between Detroit's Don Mossi and Bobby Shantz by belting an 8th-inning homer with one on. New York wins at home 3 - 0.

1964: After weeks of negotiating, Ford Frick tells the league presidents and club owners he will not run for another term as commissioner.

1972 - Tiger shortstop Ed Brinkman commits an error, ending his major league record of 72 games and 331 total chances without making a misplay.

1986 - After Detroit wins the opener 6 - 5, game two starts off with Detroit's first two hitters - Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell - belting homers off Cleveland's Jose Roman. It is the 3rd time in a month this has occurred. Whitaker hits another as Detroit wins the shootout 11 - 9.

2001 - Detroit falls to Oakland by a score of 5 - 1. In doing so, the Tigers tie a major league record by scoring only one run in their 5th consecutive game. The last of the seven teams who did so were the 1968 Los Angeles Dodgers.

2002 - In a make-up game against the Angels, the Tigers host "Silent Night". The fans hear no electronic, video and commercial enhancements during Detroit's 6 - 3 loss to Anaheim at Comerica Park.

Tigers place Ryan Raburn on DL, recall Danny Worth.
The season-long difficulties continue for the Tigers’ Ryan Raburn.
Raburn suffered a right thumb sprain and the Tigers placed him on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, retroactive to Aug. 1.
Manager Jim Leyland said Raburn aggravated the thumb in the series at Cleveland July 24-26 and figured Raburn would be able to work through it.
“We thought it was going to be fine but it’s not,” Leyland said Sunday morning.
The Tigers recalled infielder Danny Worth from Triple A Toledo and he will play second base and bat ninth in Sunday’s revamped lineup.
Raburn, 31, is batting .172 (34-for-198) this season with just one home run. Worth was batting .277 (38-for-137) with five home runs in 36 games for the Mud Hens.

During his eight-year major league career, Baker has played first base (89 games), second base (153 games), third base (85 games), left field (10 games) and right field (54 games). He is making $1.375 million this season in the final year of his contract.
His MLB totals: .270 average (352-for-1,305), 85 doubles, 11 triples, 37 home runs and 173 RBI in 514 games during his career. It's Baker's ability to hit left-handed pitching which has the Tigers intrigued. Baker is hitting .275 with with a .753 OPS in 2012 against southpaws,.304 and .869 for his career.

The Tigers have until Oct. 31 to determine the two minor league players to send to the Cubs.
