Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Dana Wakiji at Fiesta Tigres Luncheon with Carlos Guillen;

At Fiesta Tigres luncheon honoring Carlos Guillen,

Guillen, on what he'll tell Tigers later: "We need to be in first place!"

Guillen: I got a baseball academy in Maracay. It's fun when you try to create a routine for those kids, trying to teach what is baseball.

Guillen: It's not easy to come to the US and not speak English, the food, the culture, everything is different in Venezuela.

Guillen: They think it's easy. Play 9 innings and go home. You have to prepare yourself before the game, all little things we teach in our academy.

Guillen: I started only with six. Now we've got 36. There's going to be more. We got kids from 14 years old, 14 to 16.

Guillen: (Magglio) went to my academy three days ago. He take batting practice, he work hard with the kids.

Guillen: I miss everything. Travel, have fun when you win, worry when you lose, be in the training room, the fans, the people.

Guillen: Every decision is tough. It's not an easy decision to say I'm going to retire because I've been doing this for a long time.

Guillen, on what he won't miss: "Day games."

Guillen: That's why I love to come here, I love to play here, b/c they follow you everywhere. You're in the street, they know you.

Guillen: We're always trying to make the playoffs, first place, second place, we've got good players. That's why I love this city.

Guillen: I like Justin Verlander when he pitch. I like to watch Miggy.
Guillen: Justin's one of the best pitchers I ever played (with). Miggy's one of the best hitters I ever played (with).

Guillen: Lot of good memories. That's something you always keep w/you. That's why I always talk a lot of good things about this city.

Guillen on current team: They got a good team but they need to step up. I think winning teams, they're consistent.

Guillen: They've been right there. It's good because they make a move, Omar, they need a 2nd baseman, they need a starting pitcher.

Guillen: That's one of the big things I like when I come here, they're trying to win. Mr. Ilitch, the front office, everybody trying to win.

Guillen: It's something you don't know. But they're good. I think they got everything to win this division. If they stay healthy.

LHP Daniel Schlereth is starting tonight for Lakeland. On rehab assignment.

The Tigers placed left-handed reliever Daniel Schlereth on an injury rehab assignment with Class A Lakeland on Friday. Schlereth hasn't pitched since April 20 due to left shoulder tendinitis, and he spent most of the past month in Lakeland on a workout and throwing program to build strength. He can spend up to 30 days on rehab, which would allow the Tigers to bring him back as a September callup once rosters expand.

August 4 in Tigers and mlb history:

1930: At Detroit Charlie Gehringer hits a homer to center field with the bases loaded in the 12th inning to give the Tigers a 7 - 3 win over Chicago. It is Gehringer's 4th hit and 2nd homer as he drives in six runs, and Gehringer's 2nd 12th-inning homer in a month: he hit one against Cleveland on the 4th of July.

1948: Ernie Harwell begins as an announcer for the Dodgers calling a 5 - 4 win over the Cubs. The Dodgers had to trade a player, Cliff Dapper, to the Atlanta Crackers to acquire Harwell. Brooklyn scores a pair in the 1st, one on a steal of home by Jackie Robinson.

1967 - Tigers owner John Fetzer, president of the major league television committee, announces a $50 million, 3-year deal with NBC to televise the World Series, All-Star Game, and 28 weekly telecasts.

1996: Jim Bunning, Earl Weaver, Bill Foster, and Ned Hanlon are inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame.

2003 - Major League Baseball announces a five-year deal, which will generate more than $500 million in revenue, for global licensing rights for apparel and headgear. The seven companies involved in the deal include Majestic Athletic, New Era Cap, Twins Enterprises, Nike USA, Dynasty Apparel Industries, Drew Pearson International and VF Imagewear.

Anibal Sanchez picks up first win with Detroit Tigers; receives stirring standing ovation.
from Mlive

He was chased in the seventh inning after giving up a single, but was immediately greeted with a standing ovation from most of the 41,502 fans in attendance as he walked to the dugout. He welcomed the crowd's kind gesture by tipping his cap.

"That was really amazing, really amazing," he said. "I don?t have any comparison for that. When I throw my (no-hit) game in 2006, it?s not even like that. It?s a lot of people, a lot of fans, and a standing ovation is incredible. I feel like it?s something really new for me."

The crowd's reaction seemed to have left a big impression on Sanchez, who had been told about the team's passionate fanbase prior to his arrival.

"It definitely feels like home," he said. "The best people, it feels amazing. I don?t have exactly words to express that, but the thing is amazing."
