Tigers reliever Brayan Villarreal says arm feels weak, to undergo exam.

Villarreal to undergo exam for elbow weakness.
Brayan Villarreal went to the mound Sunday for the second time in less than 24 hours in an effort to put Saturday night's loss out of his memory. Turns out he has bigger worries on his mind, the way his elbow is feeling.
It's just weakness at this point, not pain, and he was at least able to get through 18 pitches Sunday. Still, it's a worry for the Tigers, who have been trying to figure out Villarreal's on-again, off-again control and will now have his elbow checked out.
"You've got to find out the health issue. That's No. 1," manager Jim Leyland said. "Eventually you find out if he's OK. I don't know. He's not throwing good right now.
"He's gotten out of kilter right now for some reason. I don't have the answer to what that reason is, but you have to be able to do that up here. You have to be able to come back the next day and pitch because you're not going to use the other guys behind three runs. That's why we needed an inning from him."
Villarreal said he first felt some weakness after the All-Star break, when he was sidelined for the series in Baltimore. It went away, but apparently resurfaced in recent days.
"I felt like it was inflammation," Villarreal said. "It was weak, but I'm not sure what I've got. They're going to check me tomorrow."
That examination will take place in Minneapolis, where the Tigers have three games coming up against the Twins.
Villarreal took the loss against the Rangers on Saturday night after walking his first two batters in the ninth inning of a tie game. Leyland brought him back Sunday in an effort to get him past that but watched him give up two runs on as many hits with two wild pitches, all while retiring only one batter.

August 13 in Tigers and mlb history:

1900 - A mechanical pitching machine is used in a game between the Memphis Chicks and the Nashvilles. The invention of Princeton professor Charles Hinton, the early pitching gun strikes out two and allows three hits in two innings.

1902: In the 6th inning of a game with the Tigers, Harry Davis of the A's attempts a double steal with Dave Fultz, who is on third base. But Davis does not draw a throw as he goes into second, and Fultz cannot score. So, on the next pitch, he "steals" first base. The next time he steals second, he does draw a throw and Fultz scores from third. This double steal maneuver will be attempted in later years by Fred Tenney (July 31, 1908), and Detroit's Germany Schaefer (September 4, 1908), before being made illegal.

1908 - Cy Young Day is celebrated by 20,000 in Boston. He pitches briefly against an All-Star team that includes Jack Chesbro, Hal Chase, Willie Keeler, Harry Davis and George Mullin. The game is interrupted several times for presentations to the great hurler, including a great loving cup from the American League for all his accomplishments.

1911: Ty Cobb, apparently believing the Tigers can no longer win the pennant race, begins a vacation.

1934 - In a preview of the World Series, the Cardinals play the Tigers in an exhibition game in Detroit. The Deans refuse to make the trip, having both pitched the day before. Dizzy is fined $100 and Paul $50.

1947 - At Sportsman's Park, pinch-hitter Willard Brown of the Browns becomes the first black player to hit a home run in the American League. The historic homer, a pinch-hit inside-the-parker off future Hall of Fame hurler Hal Newhouser, helps the Browns beat the Tigers 6 - 5.

1969: With a unanimous vote, the major league owners elect Commissioner Bowie Kuhn to a seven-year term.

1972 - Bengals manager Billy Martin literally picks his starting lineup out of a hat in an attempt to halt the Tigers' 4-game losing streak. The ploy works as Detroit defeats Cleveland 3 - 2. Using a regular lineup in the nightcap, the Tigers lose 9 - 2.

1984 - At Cooperstown, the Tigers beat the Atlanta Braves, 7 - 5 in the annual Hall of Fame Game.

1995: Flags fly at half-mast at Yankee Stadium as Yankee legend Mickey Mantle dies of liver cancer at the age of 63 in Dallas, Texas.

2007 - Placido Polanco plays his 144th consecutive game at second base without an error. This breaks Luis Castillo's record, set earlier this season. The two streaks overlapped for many months. The Tigers still lose 7 - 2, dropping them to 8 wins in their past 25 games and a tie for first place with the Indians.

Jim Leyland is right ... sort of.

The Tigers manager started a minor firestorm when he referred to Mike Trout as "Wonderboy" in suggesting his own Miguel Cabrera is deserving of the AL MVP Award so far. Leyland's comments really weren't derogatory, as he was simply referring to the potential of voters getting caught up in Trout's storyline. Hey, he's right in that regard; voters do love a good storyline. It's why Ichiro Suzuki won in 2001 over Jason Giambi and teammate Bret Boone. Or why Miguel Tejada won over Alex Rodriguez in 2002. Interestingly, the last "Wonderboy" to challenge for an MVP trophy was A-Rod in 1996, and he finished second to Juan Gonzalez in one of the worst MVP votes of all time.

That's because what MVP voters really like is a player who makes the playoffs. It's why Ryan Braun beat out Matt Kemp in 2011 or why Joey Votto collected 31 of 32 first-place over Albert Pujols in 2010 despite basically identical numbers. Of the 34 MVP trophies handed out during the wild-card era, only six have gone to players whose teams didn't reach the playoffs: Pujols (2008), Ryan Howard (2006), Barry Bonds (2004 and 2001), A-Rod (2003) and Larry Walker (1997). So maybe Trout is the MVP favorite right now, but that all changes if the Angels don't reach the playoffs (the same, of course, can be said for Cabrera).
