Tigers' Miguel Cabrera leaves game in second inning with sore ankle.
from the detnews

Cabrera has been nursing a 'sore left ankle' that has been bruised and beaten by several foul tips several in recent weeks.
He's batting .326 -- second in the AL -- with 31 homers and a league-leading 105 RBIs.

Miggy exits early with right ankle injury.
As difficult as it is to spoil a sunny afternoon with Justin Verlander on the mound, a Miguel Cabrera injury might just do it. Once Cabrera limped off the field in the middle of the second inning on Thursday, the Tigers had a real concern on their hands heading into a big series against the Angels this weekend.
Cabrera left the series finale against the Blue Jays with right ankle soreness. He's listed as day to day.
Cabrera had been dealing with a sore left ankle for most of August, but had been able to keep playing. Manager Jim Leyland put Cabrera at designated hitter for a couple of games to try to get him off his feet without taking his bat out of the lineup.
Cabrera seemed to be fine since then until Thursday, when he apparently injured the other ankle. He was hobbling around first base in his first-inning at-bat, a line drive to right field that Anthony Gose snared with a diving catch.
Cabrera took his usual spot at third base in the second inning, but assistant athletic trainer Steve Carter came out of the dugout to check on him after the second out. After Cabrera tried walking around, he limped off the field and into the dugout. Ramon Santiago replaced him at third.
Cabrera is batting .326 with 31 home runs and an American League-leading 105 RBIs.

Cabrera said he turned right ankle last week at plate during an AB. He's hopeful he can play tomorrow. Leyland said he could DH him.

Tigers 3 - bluejays 2 : Alex Avila hits walk-off in 11th,
Justin Verlander fans 12 as Detroit Tigers complete series sweep of bluejays.
from Mlive

Verlander walked only two and struck out 12 to regain the major-league lead in strikeouts (192), surpassing teammate Max Scherzer (186). It's the fourth start this season he's struck out nine-plus batters.

Verlander didn't enter in the 10th, giving him his third straight no decision -- a first in his career.

Verlander ranks 40th in run support in the American League -- receiving slightly more than 3.5 runs per start. For comparison sake, Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer both average five-plus runs.

Verlander took sole possession of fifth place in the Tigers' record books with 1,407 career strikeouts. He now trails Mickey Lolich, Jack Morris, Hal Newhouser and Tommy Bridges.

Tigers' Drew Smyly gets Doug Fister's start Saturday.
from the detnews

The next question, unanswered so far, is whether Doug Fister will miss more than one start — now that he's definitely going to miss one.
Manager Jim Leyland made it certain Thursday morning that Fister, as expected, will miss his scheduled start Saturday.
Drew Smyly will be recalled from Toledo to start in his place — meaning the Tigers will have to make a roster move to add him.
"Fister is not pitching Saturday, Smyly is, and that's the end of the conversation," Leyland said.

Tigers tab Smyly to replace Fister on Saturday.
Rookie left-hander returns to the starting rotation to face Angels.
The Tigers didn't need to wait until the last minute to make a decision on Doug Fister. He has been scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday against the Angels after the team medical staff determined his right groin strain wouldn't allow him to be ready to pitch.
Thus, the Tigers will follow their contingency plan and start rookie left-hander Drew Smyly in Fister's place. Smyly began the year in the rotation but lost his spot while he was injured once Detroit traded for Anibal Sanchez last month. He'll be making his first start for the Tigers since July 6, the final week before the All-Star break.
Whether it'll be a one-time start for Smyly or something more is the next question. The fact that the Tigers haven't put Fister on the disabled list suggests at least some hope they can get him ready for next weekend against the White Sox.
If the Tigers send down a reliever for Saturday, for instance, they could go a man short in the bullpen for a day and then get back to full strength by recalling left-hander Duane Below, who would be eligible to return by then. The catch with going a reliever short, however, is that Smyly hasn't lasted five innings in any of his five starts since the Tigers optioned him to Triple-A Toledo after the Sanchez trade, though he pitched only one inning on Monday in order to be ready to pitch on short rest.
Smyly opened the season in Detroit's rotation and maintained his starting spot through the first half, save for his mid-June stint on the disabled list with a blister problem. He went back on the DL after the All-Star break with an intercostal strain, but by the time Smyly was ready to come back, the Sanchez trade filled a spot in the rotation.

Jose Valverde hits saves century mark with Tigers.
With a scoreless ninth inning to seal a 3-2 win over the Blue Jays on Wednesday night, closer Jose Valverde became the fifth pitcher in Tigers history to record 100 career saves with the club.

And Valverde did it exactly the way you would expect him, too.

He didn't strike anyone out. He didn't have a clean inning. He did allow things to get a bit interesting when 45-year-old Omar Vizquel singled with two outs in a one-run game -- although it was nothing like Valverde's usual heart-stoppers. But in the end, he danced.

"I think he deserved that and it's going to be a lot more coming," said Joaquin Benoit, the eighth-inning guy who has been setting up most of Valverde's save opportunities since last season. "It's a good milestone for him and hopefully he can keep getting some more with us."

In his three years with the Tigers, Valverde has been one of the best closers in the game. Although he keeps it interesting, his conversion rate on save chances ranks as the best of any closer since 2010.

Valverde tallied 26 saves his first year in the Motor City before his historic 49-for-49 season in 2011. When catcher Alex Avila threw out Vizquel attempting to steal second on Wednesday, Valverde recorded his 25th save this year.

"I'm happy for him," Avila said. "Getting 100 saves, that's a pretty good accomplishment. It's not easy throwing a guy out with him on the mound, but I was pretty excited to end the game."

Holding runners on is one area Valverde hasn't excelled. Until Vizquel, opponents had been 17-for-17 in stolen base attempts against Valverde since Avila threw out Kansas City's Eric Hosmer trying to steal third base on July 10, 2011.

"When Jose's on the mound and a guy takes off, I just try to get rid of it as quickly as possible and try to put a perfect throw," Avila said. "I know a perfect throw is the way I'm going to get a guy with him."

Justin Verlander below the surface.
from fangraphs

Today, Verlander threw 115 pitches against the Blue Jays. Of those pitches, 21 were sliders, and 17 of those sliders were strikes. Ten of those sliders generated swinging strikes. Verlander threw well more sliders than he did curveballs, and when you think Justin Verlander, you think triple-digit heat and knee-buckling curve.

Tigers 3 - Blue Jays 2: Happ-y to sweep 'em.
from blessyouboystigersblog

The entire series felt like one the Tigers could have been expected to lose at every moment. Certainly you want to give some credit to them for coming away with the sweep. On the other hand, you definitely have to give some credit to the Blue Jays for making it easier. Look at the scores: Detroit won three games by a combined four runs. The Tigers scored 11 for the series. That's not generally happy-fun-time land.
But this time, it was. In the standings, that's all that counts.

August 24 in Tigers history:

1909: At Detroit, A's catcher Paddy Livingston throws out Ty Cobb trying to steal third base during an intentional walk to Sam Crawford. Cobb intentional spikes 3B Frank Baker on his bare hand during the play, prompting howls of protest from the Athletics. The Tigers win, 7 - 6, and A's manager Connie Mack will complain to Ban Johnson about Cobb's dirty play. Cobb gets a warning from the American League president.

1914: In the second game of a twinbill at Washington, Detroit's Hooks Dauss and four Nats pitchers combine to plunk a record seven batters, a major-league record that will remain unmatched until 1971. Hooks hits three while Jim Shaw, Jack Bentley, Harry Harper, and Jim Stevens hit four. The Tigers win 11 - 0, and take the opener as well 3 - 1.

1938 - Signed by the Tigers and beginning his pro career in 1938 with the Detroit Tigers,
Virgil Trucks strikes out his 418th batter - the highest season total in organized ball this century - for Andalusia in an Alabama-Florida League game. Virgil "Fire" Trucks will go on to win 177 games over a 17 years in the majors, spent mostly with the Detroit Tigers, and only have two losing seasons in the bigs. Becoming a two-time All-Star and throwing a pair of no-hitters during his career both in 1952.

1940: In the Tigers' 12 - 1 victory at Fenway Park, Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams pitches the last two innings against Detroit, allowing one run on three hits.

1976: At Tiger Stadium Bill Freehan hits his 200th and final home run in a 12 - 7 loss to the White Sox. The Detroit catcher will finish his career with 100 homers hit at home and the other 100 dingers hit on the road.
