Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Tigers temper expectations for pitchers at plate.
The Tigers spent the weekend getting Justin Verlander, Doug Fister, Drew Smyly and Rick Porcello used to hitting again by having them take practice. They are not raising expectations for them to be productive hitters.
"I just want to emphasize to lay the bat on the ball," manager Jim Leyland said. "Don't try to do too much, just lay the bat on the ball. If they try to overswing and hit home runs and that kind of stuff, they're wasting their time."
Verlander and Fister will start Games 1 and 2 of the World Series in San Francisco, where the Tigers will not have the luxury of the designated hitter. Smyly and Porcello were included because they could end up in a hitting situation as either a long reliever or a spot starter in case of injury.
Verlander, famously, is 0-for-24 as a hitter, striking out 14 times while laying down nine sacrifice bunts. Fister had two hits as a Mariners pitcher in 2011 but went 0-for-2 with the Tigers this season.

Time to get the Tigers World Series Game Thread up and running.....

Tigers go with Delmon in LF, Garcia in RF, Avila catching for Game 1.

Less than two months after his MLB debut, Avisail Garcia 34 is starting Game 1 of the World Series. He'll be in RF as RH bat against Zito.

First start for Alex Avila against a lefty starter since Sept. 1, when he faced Francisco Liriano.

Worth noting, though, that Avila has caught all of Verlander's starts this postseason.

Who Should Close for The Tigers.
from fangraphs

Closer by committee still is a dirty phrase in some circles, but it?s almost certainly the best option for Detroit against San Francisco. Against the top of the order, go right-handed. Against the bottom, go left-handed. There are going to be situations where Coke is the best option, and there are going to be situations where Valverde (or Dotel/Benoit) is the best option. The Tigers best chance to win will come from using multiple closers, rather than relying either on Valverde?s track record or Coke?s run of recent success. The answer is not either-or, but both.

Three of 4 times Tigers have won World Series ? 1935, 1945, 1968 ? they lost Game 1, all 3 times by shutout.

Jose Valverde had his left shoulder iced. Maybe that's his problem. He's icing the wrong shoulder.

winner of G1 of World Series has won 66 times (61.7%). Home teams to win G1 since 1993 have all won series.

It was the first time in Verlander's career he didnt retire a single batter on the first or 2nd pitch of an at-bat.
