Deyonta Davis declares and hires an agent

PLANS to hire an agent. He hasn't yet.

Wish Izzo would've used him more last year. I wouldn't be surprised if that hurt us with getting Jackson.

Good thing Izzo ran Bess and Clark off. Now he can put all the walk ons on scholarships.

Can't say I blame him. Unfortunately I think Izzo screwed him over last year minutes wise, and I'm sorry but if I'm an NBA talent like Jackson that plans on being a one and done there's little chance I come to MSU.

So now our bigs are Schilling, Goins, and Nick Ward. Awesome.

Bridges can/will play the 4 but we're thin now.

I think there's a huge difference between Josh Jackson and Deyonta Davis in terms of being a one and done. JJ is going to be top 3 regardless of where he goes, DD is a project. Keep in mind that other lottery picks went to Kansas and played less than DD. If you're trying to win games you don't play a project type player 30 minutes

Well nuts. But you can't completely fault the decision. I don't think he's ready to help an NBA team next year, but next year's draft should be pretty strong. So he might not help his stock a ton by staying.

This can still be a very good team and I guess won't be burdened with the crazy expectations it might have otherwise. It means Bridges and Langford have to be really good right away (which means we lose them probably after next year, especially Bridges). It means lots of shots for Harris, which might be ok. It means there will be roles for Ward and Winston as freshmen, which as 4 star recruits likely coming off the bench is not a bad thing. It means McQuaid may have to step into a bigger role, which he is capable of. Maybe now a role for Ahrens as well.

A big man rotation of Schilling/Ward at the 5 and Bridges/Goins at the 4 is not overflowing with size, but can work IF injuries and foul trouble aren't an issue (which unfortunately they often are).

Schilling might be the key to the whole season now.

The decision by Davis is fine, good for him, it just sucks for us. We would have been the odds on national title favorite with JJ and DD, now we're scrambling for a grad transfer possibly. We should still be a good basketball team and a big ten title contender, but the expectations are severely diminished now.

Probably a top 15 team with plenty of young talent to make a run in March.

This is definitely on Izzo for benching constantly benching him. Now he should have the time and the scholarship to go recruit Marvin Clark...

I share the sentiments with those who didn't always like how he was used this year or how many minutes he was getting, but I don't think he's leaving to get away from Izzo because of any of that. He got a solid first round grade, and he's going. Simple as that. And I guess whatever Izzo did with him throughout the season didn't hurt his stock.

I hope he is prepared and can stay in the league more than 1-2 years

leaving way too early

When he's drafted in the top half of the first round, Izzo is gonna look like a fool. 18 minutes per game????

maybe - makes sense but I also think if Izzo utilized him properly and allowed him and the team to have more success, maybe he'd want to stick around to win a title. Also, I don't disagree with the decision by Davis given his grading but I do disagree with the grading. I'm no NBA scout and i don't even follow NBA basketball, but I'm with Spartans23 - I don't think he's ready. Good luck to him.

Just because the NBA sees you as a worthwhile investment doesn't mean that mean that you should play 30 minutes in college. Those are two different situations, I'm not saying he should have played 18 or less but he was a project, like most young big men. Guys like Simmons or Okafor tend to be the exception, a lot of the guys that go early are like Cheick Diallo who averaged 7.5 minutes for Kansas and just declared. Usually guards/wings that leave early are more ready for extended minutes than big men.

Exactly. Skal Labissiere played 16 mpg for Kentucky. He's still probably going in the first round, and maybe still higher than Davis. Don't think people are saying Calipari was wrong to only play him 16 mpg.

I can god damn guarantee that those other players weren't losing minutes to players like Gavin Schilling and Kenny Goins!!!

Those players were behind other first round talent, not walk ons.

Or Wollenman, in the NCAA tournament when we were trailing the whole time with our season on the line. I'm with you here - we don't even need to see where the kid gets drafted, Izzo gave him way too few minutes. If he was benching him so he could watch and learn from a solid player, fine. But when he's already better on both ends of the floor than the guy he's subbing in for him, it's a total waste.

You and Spartanmack hit the nail on the head. I think it was obvious to everyone that Davis was our best big man. Give Davis the minutes that Costello had and more importantly the touches that Costello got and I guarantee he'd have better numbers.

Bridges is an absolute beast and is without a doubt a one and done player. If Izzo doesn't start him from day one I'm just going to give up on the idea of MSU ever getting big time recruits. It just won't happen if they ride the pine.

Hard to say on the grading. The NBA does draft often on potential now and Davis has considerable potential even if he's far from a finished product.

And that's sort of the thing. Guys who leave after 1 year, you kind of at least like to see them leave a bit of a mark in college and make a big impact first, before they move on. And that did not really happen in this case, though I guess again it is fair to ask how much of that was on Izzo.
