Get StartedI'm talking about factual things that Mayhew did that are relevant to the topic. Mayhew said he had a conversation with Ihedigbo. And then Ihedigbo shows up for voluntary OTAs. It's a great job by Mayhew. Good cheap contract for a solid player.
Also Tulloch was particpating in OTAs. Very good sign. Now get Waddle healthy and the Lions will be all set.
Where does it say he had a conversation with him?
General manager Martin Mayhew won't say whether the club is willing to rework the deal, though did say he was willing to sit with Ihedigbo once he showed up in Allen Park and talk things over.

Sounds like they never talked based on the Mlive post. Where did you see your factual information?
The whole point of this was that he outplayed the contact he decided to sign. It wasn't forced on him to sign it, he choose to. What if he under performed (like he did down the stretch) all year... could the Lions choose to under pay him (instead of cutting him)? No, so be a man and play out the contact that you signed.
I can get on board with that as soon as teams play under the same rules as players.
A team can cut you any time. If your money isn't "guaranteed" they just don't have to pay you any more. If you're too expensive, they can cut you and save money.
But players can just walk away and go somewhere else. Only the team has the options here.
When the teams man up and live out the contracts they signed the players to, then the players won't have any sympathy from me.

Players get guaranteed money which alot of the times is more than enough. Min salaries are more than enough in this society. Ihedigbo should be set for life before he signed that Lions contract with years of NFL min salaries. Plus a free education before that with a degree.
The teams don't have to offer anything if the player sucks. If a player plays poorly over 2 years, you dump him. If a new guy makes your team better, you add the new guy and dump the solid or mediocre guy.
Dig signed his deal, played well most of the season (not Week 17). Both he and the Lions should honor the contract in this case.
Lions handed Dig a check for 750 k just to sign. Another 775 k was made by him last year. He gets another 1.625 million in cash this year. That's alot of money.
And not a single thing you said changes anything.
Teams AND players sign contracts. When a team doesn't like the terms any more, they cut the player. When the player doesn't like the terms, the team says "Hey, you signed the deal, you have to see it through".
Why? The team doesn't have to.
I don't care if a contract is for $3 or $3B.... a contract is only good so long as BOTH sides have to honor it equally. And the teams don't have to live up to it.
Than can cut a guy 24 hours into his deal if they are willing to take the cap hit for doing it. The player can't opt out 24 hours later. It's a one-sided relationship.

The team honors it by paying a guy when they do well and earn the right to keep their job. The player does not honor a contract if he plays shittily. You are paying for good play, not just a body.
If you suck at your job, you get fired. It's the way it works. My company could lose it's contract if we did a terrible job.
Simply put, you're wrong. Teams give a contract for a number of years.
Not a single player has ever had a contract that said "You will play for us until you get to 30 sacks." They are paid PER SEASON.
Play great or play badly, and it's still a contract. Teams have the option to end that contract, but don't try to act like it's equitable to both sides.
If the coach is shit, and calls terrible plays, the player doesn't get the option to just go to another team.
Teams demand loyalty, but they don't show loyalty to the players. So when a player holds out for more money, more power to him. It's the only leverage he has.
