DJ Durkin and Maryland program :culture

Geez, that sounds really bad.

Durkin is a scumbag.

Harbaugh has hired some good assistants, but he really whiffed on Durkin and Drevno.

How do these assholes (Durkin and Court) still have jobs? And how does Maryland manage to keep enough guys to field a team every year, given how horrible things apparently are there?

Durkin was just one year, right?

Yeah. And the defense was good all year, except for the OSU game. Hard to give Durkin ALL the credit for the improvement, when Mattison was also on staff.

a week after the OSU game, Durkin was taking the Maryland job.

I remember looking at the coaching staff pics when Harbaugh put his first staff together, noticing the huge smirk on Durkin's face, and thinking "THat guy looks like a problem"... but I figured Harbaugh knew what he was doing.

in the end, I'm happy because we ended up with Don Brown, although last year was disappointing because of the dysfunction on offense. Need to get both sides of the ball working right in the same year... and you figured there's some urgency because assistants leave all the time. How long will Don Brown stay? I hate thinking we're wasting his talent by putting morons in charge of the offense.

anyone else get the sense while reading the article that Durkin and his staff had been watching a little too much Full Metal Jacket when determining what their coaching philosophy would be?

I guess they only watch up to the part where Vincent D'Onofrio's character snaps and kills his sergeant and himself:
"what a great training regimen! It even got Private Pyle on the same page as everyone else. okay, hit stop, and let's rewatch the first 30 minutes again."

Haha, I just read the deadspin article on this and they said the same thing.

also... according to the article, they punished a kid for getting hurt by forcing him to take part in a tug of war alone against the rest of his position group? WTF? they're right, that has nothing to do with discipline, that's just brutal.

Durkin should be fired. the players that spoke out should be commended.

Durkin has no business coaching a football team.

Sounds like the IU coach from a couple of years ago. I wonder if that guy has a job right now

OH wait! He works for OSU!!

#Maryland has placed head coach D.J. Durkin on administrative leave. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada will serve as interim coach. Athletic director Damon Evans statement: "Extremely concerned by the allegations of unacceptable behaviors by members of our football staff."

He interviewed for the Maryland job the week of the game. I remember we were shocked at the time because it was a bad look seeing had we won we would have won the division and it appeared as he was not focussed on the game

Yeah I was thinking this myself as I was watching the game and fixating on Durkin on the sidelines. I was all, like, ?where the hell is that guy?s mind at right now? A shot at the national championship is on the line here!?

I remember being flamed that week because of it. It was a shit move on his part. Finish your present duties first.

Maryland fired one of the assistants who was at the practice where the player died earlier this summer.

APparently the kid was unconscious for over an hour before they called an ambulance (?)

And the University president went and personally apologized to his parents.

Jabrill Peppers told Rich Eisen that Durkin was a shitstain when he was at Michigan as well (link).

Two months after it happened and only when it picked up more national media attention.

Durkin should be packing his bags. they might tolerate piling up a body count to win football games at private universities, (see, e.g. Notre Dame), but public schools cannot do that.

There's no excuses for losing football games, but personally I do feel kind of vindicated in my own belief that there was more to that 42-13 loss to Ohio state in Harbaugh's first year than the scoreboard indicated.

I'm not saying we should have won, but come on: they played OSU closer the year before with Hoke on the sideline and Nussmeier calling plays. it was super bizarre to see the defense fall apart like that in just one week.

And I wouldn't put it past OSU or Durkin (assuming there was already static around him and Harbaugh) to "share" some gameplanning tips that week.

Remember it was only 14-10 at the half and we got that roughing the punter penalty that fucked us and kept our defense on the field. We were up 10-7 I think when that happened and they ended up scoring. Someone correct me if im misremembering. Defense was a sieve after that and they ran all over us.
