Does Michigan control their own destiny?

Interesting debate from the GameDay staff last night....their actual question was "How many teams control their own destiny?".....which makes NO sense because the answer to that HAS to be 4.

But the question was interesting.....does Michigan control its own destiny?

I'd say, as of today, no...they don't. If Georgia was to beat Bama in the SEC championship game....they both get in. Clemson wins out and they're in.....and I simply don't see the committee putting in Michigan over ND when ND won the head to head game.

Just wondered what Michigan fans thought?

Yes...they do since Georgia is going to get smashed by Alabama. Therefor michigan controls their own destiny and is in if they continue to win.

It's a concern, but I think we do.

I don't see them leaving us out if we win the Big Ten as a 12-1 team, regardless of what else happens.

Georgia's loss was worse than ours.

I know the transitive property doesn't apply, but in this case I also think if Georgia lost to LSU by 20, and LSU got shutout by Bama at home, losing by 29, I don't see how Georgia hangs with Alabama.

LSU, UGA are comparable to OSU/PSU.

Bama is the only SEC school in a class by itself.

Clemson faces even less competition in the ACC.

I kind of forget the ACC exists outside of Clemson these days.

I didn?t see it as much of a debate-pollock raised the question and everybody else agreed that Michigan should get the nod in that scenario and Polic then came around.

That doesn?t mean the committee will do the right thing, but the entire college football universe outside of the SEC will be screaming bloody murder if a non-champion joins its conference champion in the final four.

There might be a complete overhaul in the selection process should that happen.

I'm not trying to debate whether I think Georgia will be Alabama....I don't....but if a major upset were to occur....

1. With the press they're getting.....a one loss Bama is in. I don't think that's even a debate at this point. The committee loves Bama like Kanye loves Kanye.....or Vitale loves DOOK.

2. If Georgia were to beat said "greatest team ever".....they're in. THAT is the only debatable part to me. That win would give Georgia the best win. They might have the worst loss.....but they would clearly have the best win.

If the major upset does happen, we'll definitely get fucked over. No doubt about that.

It can be more than 4 if two of the teams that control their own destiny play each other. It doesn't have to be more than 4 in that situation, but it can be. Like if the #4 teams plays the #5 team near the end of the season.

538 seems to point to 3. Bama, Clemson, and Georgia. They have ND at a 91% chance of making it in if they win out. Michigan at 82%.

You’re right. I realized that a bit too late....but in THIS case it's still 4. Because in that scenario.....Michigan does NOT control their own destiny. Bama, Clemson, ND and Georgia do.

Michigan would be out no matter the outcome of their games.

Control their own destiny implies the assumption that they win out. In your scenario both cannot win out.

Apparently the consensus is that Alabama actually doesn?t control its own destiny; and it also doesn?t have to.

If Alabama doesn?t have to win out to get in, their destiny is already determined.

They don't all have to be able to win out simultaneously to control their destiny. They just have to be assured to move on as long as they win.

But you make an interesting point about Bama.

I'm not sure that Michigan can't pass ND if ND keeps looking unimpressive in their wins.

That was the main point during the show last night.

the ND SOS is pathetic and they won't be playing for a Conf title, so should M run the table and win the BigTen, the week-1 7pt loss becomes far less significant.

Based on the FPI index, right now Michigan would both be in against Notre Dame.

So if Georgia beat Bama maybe it will be the Irish who will get boned over this time.

If M goes 3-0 and 12-1 and does not make the playoff, will Sparty fans burn couches in celebration?

ND has a top 10 double digit win vs Stanford and 4 top 25 wins.

We dont have a top 10 win...yet and have faced 5 top 25 teams with an L.

Then obviously the head to head loss.

The way its going if we make it to the B1G championship game its going to be against an unranked opponent so thats not really going to help much.

Georgia is going to get crushed by Alabama...Michigan needs to win out. Easy.
