So it just occurred to me, the NFL is asking teams to turn over their phone records. Why? What does that prove? That teams talked to the agents for these players, which they were allowed to do?

But what they are NOT allowed to do, in any way shape or form, is talk directly to the player. That's not only a violation, but it's actually illegal under labor laws and the anti-trust exemption.

That's why the NFL is kicking up such a shit storm over this, and it's why they want the phone records. They've learned the Dolphins talked directly to Suh over the weekend rather than his agent.

If the Dolphins made direct contact with the player for another team, it's very very bad juju. They may really be in a lot of hot water over this one. The Lions, legally speaking, could take the NFL itself to court for damages for failure to abide labor laws. And when you are talking a player of Suh's caliber, those damages could be astronomical in the eyes of a court.

They also aren't allowed to talk finalized contract details. ...and numerous sources leaked numbers. 1st and 3rd please. Thank you suh for being good for something!

By all accounts they are holding off until tomorrow to sign him so they can claim they didn't finalize a deal.

But if the phone records show they contacted him directly, it doesn't matter. They are totally boned for that one.

My guess, phone records will show the Dolphins contacting Suh BEFORE the legal tampering period. Why else would they be nervous? Why else would they feel confident in signing Suh, even though several teams were interested?

You guys are nuts. This smells all bark no bite to me. Save your phone records. Uh ok.

This was the same situation with Jarrad page ("impermissible contact with a player under contract"). It was phone records that did us in in that situation and we lost a 7th and swapped 5ths for a player we didn't even get. I don't know what the compensation would be for one of the biggest FA's in memory.

That sounds pretty sweet, better top it off with a 3rd in 2016 as a compensatory pick.(assuming we don't do much in FA)

Interesting, since Ngata deal was a trade and done prior to start of FA, that doesn't count toward the weighting of FA. So even though he is Suh equivalent if he'd been FA, which would mean Lions don't get Comp pick, lions can still acquire a R3 comp for him.

Is this correct or am I missing something?

That is correct. The assumption is salary signed is the biggest contributing factor into determining comp picks. However no one really knows for sure how the NFL decides.
I could see possibly getting around a 5th for Fairly as well, if he signs a 6 or so million per year contract.

Bush since he was cut I believe there is no comp for him. Sims is a guy that could help offset a signing we make, should he sign elsewhere.

If I had to guess now I would predicting a 3rd (probably the 33rd pick of round 3, since he will be the biggest FA lost). A 5th for Fairly. nothing else.
