Tigers announce Al Avila as new general manager, executive VP of baseball operations.

Quote from Ilitch: “I’ve decided to release Dave from his contract in order to afford him the time to pursue other career opportunities.”

More from Ilitch statement: “I feel this is the right time for the Tigers to move forward under new leadership.”

per Jason Beck

Tigers release Dave Dombrowski from his contract, name Al Avila new GM.

Dombrowski is no longer with #Tigers per Illitch.

And Dave Dombrowski to Boston rumors will begin… now.

Stunning news out of Detroit: Dave Dombrowski leaves Detroit, and Al Avila is now the new GM and executive vice president for #Tigers

There's no quote provided by Dave Dombrowski in the #Tigers' press release announcing the move. That's pretty telling,

Al Avila and Tigers staff members just exited the clubhouse, which remains closed.

Detroit's brass, including new general manager Al Avila, just exited #Tigers' clubhouse. No sign of Dave Dombrowski.

There are going to be ALOT of stories on this unbelievable move. I will try to put all of them here as they come in.

Wow!!! Never thought this would happen during the season. Unless DD requested it.

For the Brad haters...it is more likely that he stays since they hired the new GM from within. If they would have hired someone from the outside it is more likely he would want his own guy. That said...he might still want a change.

Great, now the worthless POS Alex Avila will be a Tiger for years to come.

I think Avila still fires him. Brad may not make it to the end of the year.

Didnt expect it to be the GM who was let go before the end of the year.

Surprising move, obviously.

I cant help but wonder if Illitch is a little irked that Dombrowski 'gave up' on the season, by trading Price/Soria/Cespedes for a bunch of prospects. (even though most of us agree that was the correct move given their record.) I doubt Dombrowski would have done so without a thorough discussion with Mr. I, but if thats the case, why fire him now? I dont buy the 'giving him extra time to find a new job' excuse...

Maybe Mr I is upset that he allowed his GM to meet the luxury tax level and he put a sub .500 team on the field!

But why keep him? There's really nothing to gain if they knew he wasn't going to be back next year. The trade deadline has passed. Avila can take care of the rest.

Does Avila have any GM experience? This is a fucking train wreck. Now we have an inexperienced GM and manager.. what the fuck.

The more I think about this...why did they just give Avila the job? Wouldn't you think they might want to interview some other potential GM's in the off season? Just because he is familiar with the organization does not mean he is the best man for the job. Maybe some new blood is just what this organization needs.

Avila, who had been serving as an assistant GM, will report directly to Ilitch, along with executive vice president of business operations Duane McLean, who will continue to oversee the team's business operations.

"I'm very excited for this opportunity and honored and grateful to Mr. Ilitch for having the faith and trust in me to run the ballclub in our continuing pursuit of a World Series championship," Avila said in a statement. "After 24 years in professional baseball and 14 with the Detroit Tigers, I believe I'm uniquely qualified to be successful in this role in leading this organization. We're confident we can make a strong push to win this year, and that we have the foundation in place to win next year and for years to come."

Avila, the father of Tigers catcher Alex Avila, has been with the Tigers since 2002. During his time with the team, Avila has assisted in player development, overseen the amateur and international scouting staffs and played an important role in building the Major League roster.

Over 24 years working at the Major League level with the Marlins, Pirates and Tigers, Avila has helped acquire such players as Miguel Cabrera, Livan Hernandez, Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez and J.D. Martinez.

"Al Avila is a true baseball man," Ilitch said. "He's been involved in every facet of the game as a college head coach, scout and executive. His track record in identifying and developing talent is extremely impressive. I'm confident that Al will bring his own approach and his own style to the general-manager position. He's worked extremely hard over the course of his career to afford himself this opportunity with the Detroit Tigers."

Isn't he just an extension of DD? It seems like if he was a good enough assistant, DD would have made better moves along the way.

DD doesn't sell without MI approval..

Not sure I like Avila in the GM role..is it permanent?

As long as Avila can properly build a bullpen, I'm good with it. This is a good sign that Ilitch will be opening his checkbook all the way this winter.
