Detroit Lions Breakdown Podcast Episode #137: Coordinators Hired. 55 minutes.

The Lions are filling out the ranks at the top with the additions of a new Defensive and Special Teams Coordinator. This week Erik and Joe discuss the coaching staff and many of the potential rookies that could find themselves in Honolulu Blue and Silver next year.

Lions make Eagles DB coach Cory Undlin as their defensive coordinator.

What is Undlin?s connection to Patricia?

Undlin has connections to 8 Defensive Backs that will be free agents.

Lions have added Bengals? assistant Brayden Coombs to be the new special teams coordinator.

What Coombs will bring to the Lions.

Looks like Lions QB coach Sean Ryan will remain in Detroit, with the Panthers hiring LSU?s Joe Brady.

Three position coaching spots are still open.

Erik explains how the Senior Bowl works.

Bob Quinn will attend some of the East-West Shrine practices.

Listener draft questions.

Alex Karras elected to Pro Football Hall-of-Fame.

Should the Lions select Isaiah Simmons with the third overall pick?
It?s hard to draft a player that isn?t eligible (yet), but what if he declares?

Our staff noticed that everybody is crazy about Clemson swiss army knife on defense Isaiah Simmons right now. This is interesting because at least at the time of this writing, he has not even declared for the draft yet:

Today is the deadline for underclassmen to enter the 2020 NFL Draft.
Four key names yet to announce:
LB Isaiah Simmons
EDGE K'Lavon Chaisson
RB Travis Etienne
CB AJ Terrell

Nevertheless, the hype train has left the station. Ben Solak at The Draft Network had a solid article on Simmons? versatility complete with film clips, emphasizing how he was played all over the field by the Tigers in different alignments. The ridiculous athleticism and puzzlement over what position he best maps to in the NFL is reminiscent of the old Jabrill Peppers ?position in the pros? speculation prior to his being drafted out of Michigan.

More to the point for Lions fans, Erik Schlitt at Lions Wire wrote up an analysis of where this team would use Isaiah Simmons on their defense if he were selected third overall. The solution, for Schlitt, is for the Lions to use more three safety looks like the Patriots did when they were loaded on safety talent. Lots of really interesting stuff there that is definitely worth the full read, so head on over and check it out. It sounds like his managing editor at Lions Wire Jeff Risdon would prefer to solve the linebacker coverage problems though, if the team selected the Clemson standout.

Regardless of where a team plays him, Simmons is a great football player that Jordan Reid from The Draft Network loves, and Bleacher Report?s Matt Miller agrees: Isaiah Simmons No. 5 overall on my big board. Comp: Godzilla.
