I just became aware of the stake thing this morning. Driving a stake into your rivals home field seems like kind of a bad high school move, no? Further proof that Michigan football has jumped the shark. Will be interesting to see whether/how Hoke responds in his presser. Maybe he already has?

They are a terrible football team run by terrible coaches. Just shows they are dumb also.

Pretty strange move by them, don't understand it. It's just another non football story for Michigan, very odd.

Seeing the video of them wooing and driving the stake on the sidelines reminds me of something the 1989 Miami Hurricanes would do, maybe something msu under Bobby williams or john l.

I will say it's not like they killed anyone, just some 18 to 22 year Olds talking smack. ....whatever

I just remembered, and I posted on the other thread, in 1973 I think it was, the Ohio State team came out and mauled that banner that Michigan runs underneath at the beginnings of home games.

Of course, both teams were undefeated, and the Buckeyes were ranked #1, and Michigan #4.

The 10-10 tie was pretty disappointing for probably everybody, especially when the ADs blew Michigan out of the Rose Bowl the next day in Chicago.

The tie probably cost the Buckeyes the national championship, though.

It was mostly amusing. I dont think it was a big deal, Just a simple attempt to motivate a down and out program.

Yes, I had forgotten about that. Link below. Have to watch through a minute or so to see the act.

I didn't realize this was on the Spartans board, and not the Wolverines board until I had posted to it.

Nowadays, I just click on the New Posts icon on threads that seem interesting...

That having been said...

I like the old school, no blackboard material approach..."they're a great team...blah blah blah...it's such an honor to be able to compete in such a great rivalry...blah blah blah...we'll have to bring our A game, and prepare as we can to be able to be in a position to have a chance to win at the end....blah blah blah, blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah blah..."

That said...the most dumbass thing about the stake...is that Michigan has sucked so badly of late...sucked this rivalry...and sucked in general...and was probably going to suck in this game...which they did...

Which just makes whomever did it look like an ass hat.

When the hated Buckeyes tore down the Michigan banner...they were #1 and undefeated...Michigan was #4 and undefeated...and the rivalry had been pretty even.

So the Buckeyes were playing to secure the #1 ranking going into the Rose Bowl, and at the same time, ruin hated rival Michigan's chance at the Rose Bowl, the Big Ten Championship, an undefeated season and possibly the national championship for themselves.

So when the hated Buckeyes failed to achieve this accomplishment...which again, likely cost them the national championship (jwlcosu couldn't to bear quoting this in his reply to me...)

They only looked a little ass hattish....

Exactly. If you're going to do crap like that you damn well better win...or at least have the conference AD's in your back pocket.

Ha!

The conference ADs couldn't secure the #1 ranking.

Although it likely wouldn't have made a difference.

Although the Buckeyes still went into the postseason with the chance of winning the national championship, they no longer controlled their own destiny.

Hence they probably prepared for USC in a much more relaxed and unpressured circumstance than they otherwise would have.

Had they gone into that Rose Bowl with their national championship dreams controlled by their own destiny, they probably would have choked that game away like they always do.

as far as the stake goes, do you consider this more or less stupid than skywriting over Spartan Stadium last year?

The stake was definitely more stupid. Skywriting was a clever and funny by-product of the rivalry. The stake was an aggressive move on the part of actual participants.

the sky writing was clever if a fan had paid for it, something like MSU fans paying for a billboard about UM or painting the M at the diag, just a dumb prank. It seems a bit strange that Brandon was involved in it and the university was spending its money to skywrite over Spartan Stadium. the stake thing isn't that big of a deal, there are a lot of programs that do dumb stuff like that, like the old hurricanes or MSU of old. the hurricanes were actually good, unlike MSU under JLS, BW, or UM under Hoke. I think taking trash or acting like that comes across as strange when your team constantly gets their teeth kicked in on the field.

The BTN reaction yesterday was priceless

They were both dumb all the way around... Jesus its not like we have a good football team anymore how can a head coach and a AD be so damn stupid... Know your team Brady. He should have stopped any pregame crap... Brandon should have been reprimanded if he did it or knew about it... To much dumb going on at Michigan in some areas of the athletic dept...

Less stupid in my opinion, but barely. The skywriting was just idiotic in that it was paid for by the AD and the game that day was not even against Michigan or a good team at all for that matter. What made it more hilarious was Michigan's near defeat that day at home against a terrible Akron team. As you said, The stake thing isn't a big deal to me if Michigan were actually a decent team and weren't the laughingstocks of college football.

Also, if you're going to put a stake in the field, why not use a decent sized one that people can actually see to prove your point? I was at the game and didn't even know about it until the next morning.

I find a lot of things that they do amusing

Wow, I didn't realize the skywriting thing was a Brandon sanctioned and paid for stunt. With that knowledge, I recast my vote.
