How is he not being looked at by NFL scouts? Is he too small? He is going to have a huge year! Without a doubt he will lead the team in sacks. His motor is incredible. If I was an NFL team I'd be all over him.

I think he could really rise on draft boards this year. Right now, the biggest thing working against him is lack of film. His first two playing years were on special teams and third-down situations. Only last year was he the official starter. And he did well, don't get me wrong, but one year of good (not spectacular) production isn't going to draw a ton of attention. If he can build on last year, I think teams will start to see him as a SAM or rush LB, and that versatility will shoot him up the boards.

Our defensive coaches said he graded out as the top player on the defense last season. He is going to get drafted, his measurables are outstanding.

Davis and Nicholson are hands down my favorite Spartans. I hope to see both of them in the NFL someday. I'm sure Monte is already on the radar. Watching the defensive side of the ball this year will be a blast. Summer is great, but nothing beats those fall Saturday's filled with college football.

Is Frey the next man up? He was a beast on special teams last year, but he is no Ed Davis. Damnit that's my favorite Spartan down for the year. Really feel bad for the guy, he was expected to have a huge year.

Just lost a first team all big ten linebacker, outside of cook and Calhoun this us about as bad as it gets.

There's talk about moving Reshke over or possibly drake Martinez

only bright side is our defense next year could be a lot better if he gets a 6th year

Im thinking Denzel Valentine will be out half the season as well when hoops starts up. Horrible loss!!

big loss that puts more pressure on the line than his replacement. It hurts to lose a key player and great athlete but if the line is as good as expected that will help mitigate the loss. Not to discount the loss but I think linebacker is a glory position that gets a lot of credit for cleaning up after the line does the heavy lifting. Katzenmoyer is my favorite example - he was a hero his freshman year when he had a bunch of seniors on the d-line (2 DE's that got drafted and a solid nose tackle) not to mention Shawn Springs and 2 other d-backs that also got drafted. His productivity dropped off quite a bit after that year.

Coincidentally, I was on campus the day the day Ed was injured. Took my family to see the campus (4H Children's Garden, Botanical Gardens, Stadium, Skandalaris, etc). All good but for football fans Skandalaris is a must. Short walk from the stadium and doesn't take long to take it in. We didn't see many people but everyone was very friendly. Ken Mannie was the only coach to come through but he walked right up to my kids, said hello and made small talk w/ them for a bit. I highly recommend it if you're in town.

Chris Fry has the inside track to replace Davis, he's got the speed and is a natural blitzer. What he doesn't have yet is quite as much strength as Davis, Davis was an animal and blew up lead blockers over and over. Joe Reschke has also moved to the outside.

This staff has a pretty incredible record with 2nd year LBs if you look back, hopefully this is another case of a guy stepping in and becoming a star.

What determines his eligibility for next year if he sits a full year now?

I believe he has to apply for a medical red shirt but I'm not positive - similar to what he'd have to do if he was a 4th year senior and got hurt early in the season after playing in some games. Not sure if or how much the fact that he's already had a red shirt (non-medical) affects the chances of getting the med red shirt.

Seems like a pretty simple case though if it's really an option for red shirt seniors - he hasn't played a single down in the injury season.

I think it's more complicated than what SpartanMack says, and it has to do with his previous red-shirt year. You can only take a 6th year if you have missed 2 seasons with injury, if his first red shirt was not for an injury he might not be able to get a 6th year. But I think the rules are pretty lax and when we applied for his 5th year we probably said his red-shirt as a freshman was related to an injury (even if it was a hang nail).

Why do you think Valentine will miss half the season? Last thing I saw on him was he was playing pretty well at the Pan Am games in late July. Did he get injured recently? or maybe having surgery from a previous/lingering injury? Can't find anything online...

I was being sarcastic, We lose a top player for at least a month almost every year since I can remember in hoops. I dont remember having a full healthy team without some major injury or sickness to a key player. I dont mean the occasional cold and out for 2 games. I just saw the davis loss rolled my eyes.
