Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley hurt his right knee in Sunday's win over the Falcons in London, but it doesn't appear to be a season-ending injury. According to a report by ESPN Chicago's Michael C. Wright, Fairley suffered damage to the medial-collateral and posterior-collateral ligaments and he will be out for at least a month.

"Full extent of MCL/PCL damage to Nick Fairley's knee still not known. Source said the hope is he can return in 4 to 5 weeks," Wright wrote on Twitter.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell on Monday night confirmed that Fairley won't be back any time soon, as he recovers. The extent of the injury is unknown, but Fairley will continue to have it examined this week to get a clearer sense.

"(The doctors) have looked at him and obviously he's not going to be back quickly. That's one of the things that we certainly know but how long it's going to be, we're not quite certain," Caldwell said on 97.1 on Monday night. "He's getting ready to go through his second opinion coming up in the next couple days or so and we'll have a little bit further information at that time."

Fairley suffered the injury in the second quarter after colliding with Ndamukong Suh while pressuring Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. Fairley's knee bent awkwardly and he was on the field for a few minutes as doctors attending to him. He left the field with some assistance and was later carted off to the locker room.

With Fairley out, rookie Caraun Reid played an increased number of snaps. Another tackle, C.J. Mosley, missed the game after being suspended for violating team rules.

Caldwell did not elaborate on the reason for Mosley's suspension

Also Caldwell told reporters it's uncertain and doesn't know of he'll return this season... So who knows.

I hope he's back. But if not. Say hello to Andre Fluellen for the millionth time.

Hopefully with Van Noy able to play he can make up for the loss of Fairley.

Hopefully he'll be able to improve upon what Ashlee Palmer has done to this point, but I don't think a linebacker is capable of making up what we'll miss with Fairley. Fairley has been great both against the pass and run.

We are losing a play maker in Fairley, so hopefully Van Not can be a play maker and not just a solid player like we have got in Palmer

if hes seeking out a 2nd opinion...the first opinion probably wasn't good news. either way a partial tear is going to take atleast 4 weeks.

Mosley has been highly competent so far. If he is back by week 10 (two weeks of suspension), I don't think there will be much drop off. The depth is a concern, certainly, but I think the starting unit should be fine.

This obviously sucks for Fairley who was having a good year before free agency. If he doesn't make it back before the end of the year, he won't be able to demand near as much on the market.

Maybe but when the teams playing good and winning games injuries like this suck..

I think the real question is what kind of shape will he be in if he returns this year? The guy is a lazy slob when not playing football. How bad will it get when he's ordering takeout every night while watching reruns of sex and the city?

If he has any chance of returning this year, which still isn't clear, it's going to take a lot of time in the workout room with the physical terrorists.

He might actually be in better shape IF he comes back.
