I think a lot of this is an example of Izzo refusing to adjust to the new rules. at a point last year, Izzo said that he was just going to coach his kids to defend the way that he always did and they started playing a lot better. the rule changes were initiated to allow the free flow of movement, it's physically impossible to stop dribble penetration when so many players are quick with a great handle, it just can't be done. you used to be able to hand check and use an arm bar to slow someone down but those are now the touch fouls that we all complain about. it's much tougher to play strictly man to man defense in the half court, this also means that you need more shot blocking and rim protection. Izzo has never been big on shot blocking becuase you get called for a lot of fouls when you swat at the ball, you usually get a lot of body on block attempts. these hallmarks of Izzo's defense aren't doing us any favors right now.

as for last night, I think there was a little more home cooking, we dominated them on the glass, they took 6 more 3's, dawson took 14 shots in the paint without any free throws? we may have picked up more fouls on the perimeter but that's what you expect on the road, the home team will always get the calls. in general it's more of a case of our defensive philosiphy not being in tune with the way the game is called now, just not as much last night.
