It's being reported that Michael Fulmer is to undergo Tommy John surgery. He is seeking a 3rd opinion.

Somebody called it a few years ago...maybe Byco??

I was thinking they might want to check with the team's medical staff. I am betting we find out this dates back to sometime last year and he was told to pitch through it.

Me too. And there were posters here who thought we were crazy.

Hindsight is 20-20, but at the time we knew we were rebuilding and even though Fulmer was an All Star, given the risk of injury to young pitchers, it was unlikely he'd be a big part of a good team in Detroit in another 4 or 5 years. His All Star year he was under a dirt cheap contract for another several years, contenders were drooling to get a #2 starting pitcher for cheap for years. We could have named our price of prospects. Instead, we waited, he had a bad second half and started to show some physical problems and we got offered a poor package in the off season.

This rebuild would be a lot further along had we traded him at peak value.

I don't know the ramifications for each of the options. If they non-tender him can any other team take him? I certainly wouldn't do that if some other team can take him.
