Fumble Rules Query

Living in Madison, many are still stung by the badger end of game debacle. On a local sports radio show a caller asked this hypothetical that stumped the hosts: With the clock winding down, a receiver makes the catch and is tackled well in bounds --no chance to get out of bounds to stop the clock as was Nick Toon....his question is if a receiver knows he can't get out of bounds why don't they lateral the ball out bounds before being tackled, thereby "fumbling" it--no issue of who from which team recovered it since it's out of bounds and the clock stops by rule.

I'm stumped too. I cant think of a rule to stop a receiver from doing this. Any rules expert know if this is legal?

:(Probably under the rule about fairness of play and an intentional fumble to stop. The clock would tot be fair

You can look online at NCAA rules

i think it technically is called under the unsportsmanlike conduct category....dont quote me on that though.

Yes it would be sportsmanlike begavior

not to be cynical, but I think Bielema could give a frig and would do it if it were legal. I say that with all due respect.

Hoke wouldn't--for the record

didn't Anthony Carter do that right before his famous catch against Indiana?

If I remember correctly, he tossed the ball to Lee Corso to stop the clock.

That was just slightly before "my time". I'll check the youtube

It was L.P. Reid who tossed the ball out of bounds and I actually think that it was the incident that caused the rule change.

yeah, you're right. you can see it here around the 0:40 second mark. He's not even about to be tackled and is like 5 yards from the sideline and just tosses it to corso.

great find. im sending this to Madison radio station--giving you full credit, of course...I mean, we're not co-workers or anything

Ok another question, if a ball is lying on the ground in bounds and you are out of bounds, you reach over and touch the ball, is it a deadball?

if anyone is out of bounds and touching the ball it is dead. it would go to the team that last had possession.

this is what I thought. Near the end of the Rose Bowl, the UW receiver fumbled the ball and did just this. As he was out of bounds, he batted at the ball with his hand. In replays, you can clearly see him touch the ball, yet they gave the ball to Oregon, because they had a player jump on it and slide out of bounds. I thought the Oregon player juggled it a little after his body was out of bounds, as well. They reviewed the play, but very, very quickly and did not overturn it...obviously.

It looks like the receiver was still in the field of play when he swiped at it.

ok

it did still jiggle a little in the Oregon player's hands though as he was out of bounds.

I felt bad for Wisky (and my Wisconsin co-worker), plus the B1G could have been 3 for 3 in the biggest bowls. And 5-5 overall.

Your co-worker is prolly shitting peanut butter with Chryst taking the whole offense staff to Pitt. WI is in trouble.
