Game 1: Lions @ Chargers Thread

Scott Linehan was a horrible play caller too. Dallas put up pretty good numbers yesterday and last year....

So what?? Did you even watch yesterday's Giants/Cowboys game yesterday? Dallas was getting spanked offensively until the end of that game. The Giants handed that game to the Cowboys.

And Stafford had his best years under Linehan if you want to talk numbers.
I know what you're doing. You're trying to put it on Stafford, right? Staffords fault that Tate wasn't open all game, Staff's fault that CJ was doubleteamed all day, Staff's fault that they ran AA 7 times when he averaged 7.1 yds a carry. And last but not least, Staff's fault for Rivers absolutely torching our secondary. Even our run defense was abysmal....cmon man

Yes the offense had its best numbers under him, but it was still a widely held belief on this board that Linehan was horrible at his job and was holding the offense back. Because it is always the coaches.

Our middle 8 drives (not counting the kneel down at the half) consisted on average less than 4 plays. I don't know if the coaches were diagraming shit plays, or if the players just were not executing. How much credit/blame do you give the coaches? There is a reason why the players are paid 140 million total and coaches are 10 million total. It comes down to the players...If it is all coaches why pay high prices for players? However when your QB is completing only 50% of his passes and throwing 2 picks over these 8 drives that does not give the OC much to work with.

I loved AA, he had a few big plays, but he fumbled once and almost fumbled a second time (ball came lose in his hands, but he was able to regain control). On 11 offensive touches that is not good. I would expect him to become more involved as the games go on, if he is not then blame can start falling on coaching.

It just seems like it is always the coaches. Last year Austin was a genius....Did he suddenly forget how to coach? Or was it our interior lineman getting blown up at will. Was it our aging CB (who was starting to fail during the 2nd half of last season) not doing his job.

Don't forget Staffords fault that Ebron didn't catch that first down. Staffords fault that we forget to block the DE on multiple occasions and it directly led to a TO. Staffords fault we had our LB's dropping into their zones 10 yards deep and never did anything to defend the crossing routes until it was WAY too late. Staffords fault SD converted 3rd and 12 and 3rd and 19 with simple patterns and piss poor tackling. Staffords fault Bynes was out of position two plays in a row covering Green and all Rivers had to do was flick him the ball twice for 40+ yds and a TD.

I guess what they're saying is that the Lions are a true 1-0.....but Stafford is 0-1.
LKP would agree.

That is not even close to what anyone has said.
But whatever makes you feel better about the team keep doing it for yourself.

Jax set off an incredibly loud warning bell, but few heard it, obviously none of the Lions did. Their crossing routes were never stopped and the QB simply had to throw to whomever Tully was covering. I was told not to read too much into all that. I was reminded how it was just preseason and the D was without players X, Y, and Z.

Lions are historically cursed after a 10+ win season. How many feel good about them winning 10 games after yesterday's game?

The sooner you take your Reality Pill and accept what the Lions will do this hear, the less you will have a raging hangover headache from the KoolAid.

I'm not putting it all on the coaches. I said that over a hundred times already, but the coaches went into a shell after the 1st half. How do you explain not making adjustments in the second half? The Lions were destroying the Chargers. McCoy and his staff started making adjustments and the Lions staff did NOTHING lol. Explain that.
And Stafford needed to be better, but the one pick was him getting buried into the ground and the ball flying in the air and landing into a defensive players arms. The other looked like a miscommunication between him and Tate. No idea who to blame there.

So what that Abdullah fumbled the ball? He was destroying the Chargers on the ground. Inexcusable that he carried the rock 7 times. What's the excuse on that?

And Austin is a good coach, but he was sleeping yesterday. There's no denying it. Chargers took advantage of an aging CB like you said and Austin did nothing lol. Why? What was he waiting for? Why wasn't Slay on Allen all game anyways? Is it the Richard Sherman effect all over again? He just stays on one side of the field? It was a joke lol. We all knew the ball was going to Keenan. How did the Austin and the defense not know? It was an embarrassment.

AA got the most carries and touches out of any player on the field. AA touched the ball on 11 of the 47 offensive plays (23.4% of all plays). That is fair amount of touches for the rookie. The problem is we only had 47 offensive plays.

Allen beat everyone on the Lions, he beat Slay, Mathis, he beat the zone. Its not like he had one look and one play and they kept doing the same thing.

What great adjustments did San Diego make throughout the game?

They can still win 10 games. Who says the Chargers game was an automatic win anyways?

So what that he got the most touches? He should have gotten more!!! He averaged 7.1 a carry!! Wtf are you arguing here?? lol. RUN the ball!!!!

Slay is our "best" CB. He should be on the field shadowing their "best" player. Or at least their #1 WR. That was Allen and Mathis was on Allen most of the game from what I saw. Inexcusable!!!

I have no clue what adjustments the Chargers made during the game from a playcalling point of view, but they made adjustments. Charles Davis and that midget white dude kept saying it the whole second half. It was obvious.

If this team lost a close game that went back and forth, I think we'd feel a little better than we do today. But losing the way they did, that's not easy for a team to quickly recover from. Lacking a killer instinct has been near the top of the laundry list of issues for the Detroit Lions since I was in training wheels. And nothing's really changed. Giving up a 21-3 lead is really sad.

It hurts...I agree. At least they can recover from this one. We do have to realize it's Week 1. Gotta beat Minnesota next week

Especially considering Minny has the late Monday night game. Lions get essentially 1 1/2 extra days to prepare.

Tony, it is less that they were playing the Chargers and all about how they were exposed by Jax and now by SD. Every smart team realizes the way to beat the Lions this year is throw crossing routes. They are there all day, anytime they want and they never need to stop runing that same play because the Lions have no answer.

Yeah...I don't have much faith they can stop AP when they couldn't stop Woodhead. Best hope is that Bridgewater throws 10 INTs

Every team has a weakness. Caldwell/Austin need to make adjustments then. Austin needs to have a LB/DB or whoever to take away that crossing route before it's even run. Also, the DLine needs to bring more pressure. They were doing it in the 1st half and gassed out in the second. Pressure...pressure...pressure. That's the key...
