Francisco Liriano and four relievers combined for 12 strikeouts as the Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 in the series opener Tuesday night at Comerica Park.
It was the Tigers' first game since Friday after a series of rain-outs and snow-outs washed away their weekend series. The win was the Tigers' first since April 8 and broke a five-game losing streak.
Pitching in 37-degree temperatures, Liriano struck out seven in five innings. He's allowed two runs or fewer in all three of his starts this season.
Relievers Buck Farmer, Daniel Stumpf, Joe Jimenez and Shane Greene pitched four scoreless innings to preserve a one-run lead.
The Tigers took the lead in the second inning on Victor Martinez's two-run homer to left-center, his first of the year.
After the Orioles tied the game at 2, the Tigers retook the lead in the fifth when Leonys Martin reached on a bunt single and then scored on Jeimer Candelario's RBI triple.
The Tigers picked up an insurance run in the eighth when pinch-runner Victor Reyes came home from third on a wild pitch.
WORTH NOTING
* Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera left the game with lower back tightness, the team said. Niko Goodrum moved from left field to first base in the ninth inning to replace him.
* The thermometer read 37 degrees at game time, although it felt much colder on the field with a stiff wind.
The attendance reflected the ugly weather. The Tigers announced 15,530 paid tickets sold; the actual number of people in the seats was probably less than 2,000.
* Goodrum made an unusual catch to end the fourth inning. The Tigers left fielder got a poor jump and then got turned around on a ball hit over his head. But he recovered enough to make a jumping catch on the warning track.
Things weren't as bright at the plate, where Goodrum went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts against Orioles starter Andrew Cashner.

Francisco Liriano pitched a strong but short game, as his command eventually eluded him and drove up his pitch count. Yet he managed to hold the Orioles to just two runs on five hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out seven, the first six coming among the first 11 Orioles batters.
Victor Martinez had a hot night at the plate, collecting three hits. This included the first runs of the game when he hit an opposite field two-run home run to left in the second inning. The Orioles cut the lead in half when Trey Mancini homered between the bullpens in the third inning. They would later tie the game in the top of the fifth, but the Tigers quickly untied the game. Leonys Martin laid down a textbook bunt for a base hit, and then Jeimer Candelario drove a ball off the auxiliary scoreboard in right-center field for an RBI triple.
