Shoemaker struck out seven in six shutout innings. The Tigers seriously threatened only once, when they loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning. But Shitmaker struck out Alex Avila and retired Andrew Romine and Jose Iglesias to escape the inning.

Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann has now allowed at least four earned runs in five of his last six starts. He gave up 10 hits and three walks and although he also suffered some bad breaks (a couple of infield hits and a fielding error) it wasn't an encouraging outing.
Zimmermann has allowed at least four earned runs in five of seven starts this season. He has recorded one quality start. His ERA is 6.28

Perhaps the only encouraging thing about Friday night was another solid performance by long man Chad Bell, who pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Zimmermann.

NOTEABLE:
J.D. Martinez's 2017 debut started with a base hit in the second inning, but went downhill from there. He later struck out twice and misplayed a Luis Valbuena single in right field, leading to an unearned run.

Mike Trout was 0-for-8 since returning Thursday from a hamstring injury that had sidelined him for five games. Then he faced Anibal Sanchez in the ninth.
Trout launched his third career home run off Sanchez, a two-run shot to left, to break his skid.

ROARS:
Jose Iglesias - Gold Glove incoming, baby. Iglesias continued his campaign to make everyone forget his tepid offense by being mind-bogglingly good in the field. He robbed Mike Trout of a hit and almost turned a near-impossible double play at the same time, missing the out by fractions of an inch. In an otherwise lacklustre game, Iglesias was just fun.

Chad Bell - relieved Zimmermann and pitched a scoreless inning. Not terribly exciting stuff but also not a disaster implosion that resulted in fan tears, that was yet to come.

HISSES:
Offense - it was a classic case of TTBDNS, with the bases loaded early and no one able to make anything come of it. To add insult to injury the Angels then loaded the bases and knocked in two runs, as if to say ?See, guys, this is what you?re supposed to do.? Tigers managed to collect # hits, but nary a single run.

J.D. Martinez - picking up where Tyler Collins left off on Thursday, Martinez committed an error that allowed a run to score. Welcome back, I guess.

Anibal Sanchez - Tigers? pitchers had kept reigning MVP Mike Trout hitless through almost two full games. So naturally Sanchez gave up a 430 foot 2-run home run to him in the bottom of the eighth.
9th HR allowed by Sanchez in 18-plus innings.
