Game 4: Saints @ Lions Thread

SOL: Mediocrity or Bust™ since 1957.

One would think that by using just plain dumb luck, the odds would favor a Lions team which would manage to have more than only ONE division-playoff game winning season in 63. But...NOPE...the franchise has DEFIED such odds by consistently having shitty ownership who employed shittier team presidents-GMs, FOs, and HCs, none of whom ever HCed another NFL team again. I am pretty sure that Stafford must be the longest tenured and highest paid starting NFL QB to have never led any of his teams to a division title, much less winning a playoff game.

Remove that damned WCF memorial which is not a patch, but has actually been incorporated into their team jersey sleeves. This franchise does not need to observe and 6 years passed WCF certainly doesn't deserve such a long-term honor or remembrance.

Lack of zone coverage compared to Man coverage without a pass rush
Lack of effective blitzing or volume of blitzing or disguising blitzing?
Run defense (wrong gaps, winning matchups, shedding blocks and tackling)
Lack of a speed rusher (seems Lions always just bull rush and it rarely works)
No pressure from JACK LB? Austin Bryant on PUP and Julian Okwara not stepping up early
More DE/JACK pass rush problem or DT?
Missed coverage assignments within back 7?
Lack of speed allowing receiver/TEs to run away from defenders in Man, especially crossing routes?
Coverage not long enough for the pass rush to get to QB?
Injuries? Trufant seems slowed, Williams no power with shoulder injury and Coleman out
Inexperience Okudah, Okwara, Tavai, Harris, Oruwariye

There is a list of potential defensive problems. Rank which ones are the biggest problems

1) The Lions hired a "defensive genius" that doesn't know what the hell he is doing.

Lazy critic. Not sure you even know what he is trying to do or should be doing

Give me some specifics. Besides "blitzing". What play calls are you dialing up Mr. Football

based on the results, I don't think he knows what he is trying to do or should be doing, and he's the one that is supposed to know, not me.

I don't think you know what he should be doing and you are deflecting

It could very much could be combo of execution, inexperience and injuries. And also we played some really good offenses so far.

We?re losing games, players aren?t developing and 3 years later he?s still talking about the culture when he took over.

The sooner we get his ass out of here, the sooner we can start developing players and potentially get back to winning seasons.

Maybe it takes some time. Okudah and Okwara are rookies in a weird offseason. Harris might just suck no matter who the coach is. Tavai was he a reach. Year 2 can he develop. Davis wasn't a fit for these defense. Walker has developed but more to go. AO developed some.

Everyone else a vet pretty much.

He is going to get 12 more games to prove it

Of course I don't know exactly what he should be doing. He is the one that should know what he is doing but apparently he doesn't.

No worries...most every Lions HC has earned a label or uttered what became his motto that outlived his tenure, including the one who quit near midseason after Barry Sanders left...this particular "defensive guru" believes that the NFL season begins on Thanksgiving.

So then you don't know if he is doing the right things or not. Could be doing the right things, but they are not being executed for various reasons (injuries, inexperience, random mental gaffes, speed issue, strength issue, or just a damn good play by opposing offenses that is unstoppable) etc

We gave up 90% completion percentage while we are in zone vs Brees ANNNNND couldnt stop the run. No sense to be in zone more if you literally cant stop a damn thing.

This isnt a big secret...we have no consistent pass rush. No one on the defense makes a damn bit of difference. They all get paid 10 mil a year....but they may as well be Joe Schmo undrafted because they all produce the same amount....nothing.

Thats on the GM. The fact hes drafting RBs and TEs in the top 2 rounds when this has been a consistent problem since hes been here makes him just as idiotic as Mayhew and Millen were. This year he even pocketed $16 million.

Nick Williams fucking sucks
Flowers...havent heard is name called all year
THE ABSOLUTE worst group of LBs in the NFL
No outside rush
No pressure up the middle
No coverage in the secondary
By some miracle they are +1 in turnovers but stafford is quick to fuck that stat up.

You have to blow this shit up
You have to get a new QB and get someone on a rookie contract
You have to get defensive talent that can make a difference
You have to get a coach that isnt cinderella and turns his team into a heaping pile of trash everytime he goes up 2 scores.
You have to get a GM that knows what the fuck hes doing. Literally a scrub 12 year old professional fortnite player could draft and do FA better than this turd.

all of those things fall on the shoulders of the head coach (outside of the "unstoppable play"). He has ultimate input on who is on the field, how they are trained/coached, who is on the roster, who they draft. Injuries happen but good teams overcome. I think we have seen enough out of Patricia's teams to understand that he is in over his head. His teams are 10-25-1 (.292 winning percentage). I would have to guess that there isn't a team in the NFL with a lower winning percentage since he has been the head coach of the Lions.

Lions are not paying 10 per for most in front 7. Flowers big deal at 18 per... Hand rookie deal, Okwara cheap deal, okwara rookie deal, nick williams cheap 2 year deal, shelton cheap 2 year deal, davis and tavai rookie deals, jones cheap deal, collins 10 per. So 2 in front 7

Flowers and Collins only ones playing well. Hand solid

Even secondary..Walker and and Okudah amd AO on rookie deals. Harmon trade cheaper cap hitting 4.5,.trufant backloaded 2 year 20 mil deal so 10 per but 7.5 cap hit. Coleman 9 per..so 3 out of 22 defensive players. 4 if you count coleman.

And hughes you should be glad they have 16 million in carryover for the next gm you are assuming

Offense pay Stafford and now decker and vaitai. Eventually golladay and ragnow too hopefully. Stafford average way less than 12 qbs now. 17 qbs make 25 per at least too. Most of the cheap qbs are on bad teams now

Going rookie deal on qb doesn’t change shit. Lions need to just find more guys that produce through the draft. Game changers in the draft. Lions with Stafford have good space. They could have spent on a big defender. Does Clooney or Robert Quinn or Dante Fowler fix this

Some things do. Some things he can’t control. Inexperience takes time. Injuries suck and they happen and depending on the combo can be worse than some teams. Strength they work on. May not be enough. Speed is a gm problem. Mental maybe it was taught well but they just don’t get it quickly or in heat of moment. No way to know that.

Scoring is up everywhere. Quiet stadiums favor the offense. Some lions are new to system and learning new positions.

Let’s see what happens final 12. They may never get it right. We shall see. And nobody fucking cares if you called it that they suck. They just happened to not execute you aren’t some football guru because you piled on to some losses. Losses for various reasons by the way

We're 1/4 of the way into the season, what bugs me the most is the teams/coaching staffs inability to change anything. To me, the sign of bad coaching is the inability to adjust to your players abilities. Patricia is trying to fit a large square peg in a small round hole.

We don't rush the passer well at all, so instead of blitzing more or creatively, we just continue to rush 4, play man and get torched. It's worse in zone simply because we give QB's so much time it's easy to eventually find someone open in a zone, even if the play is well covered initially. No adjustments. No new looks. Nothing for the QB's to have to think about. Nothing they haven't seen in film study.

THAT's what makes the Lions easy to play. My guess is that if you asked Drew Brees how difficult the game was for him to command he would say it was simple....probably child like in terms of Patricias defensive game plan.

He SHOULD be fired today....but that fat bastard will keep his job for 9 more weeks......run back to NE like McDaniels did and mooch off daddy Bill for a few more years.

Sigh. Do you really think it a a good idea to blitz drew brees or Aaron rodgers. The answer is no

We blitzed trubisky. Varying success. Got beat some in 4th due to it. Good d rest of game

Murray played more zone, got some pressure and got 3 picks
