Games Notes

Tigers look to salvage a series win on this road trip from hell and get back to 3 under.

24-28 4 under presently, 4th place in the AL Central 4 games back of the twins which is all bad, terrible, pathetic and unacceptable. lot of 4's, 4 runs tonight or 4 hits? maybe 4 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks. If this team could get their head out of their asses and stop chasing shit all night long for more than a couple of games at a time they might be able to still take this weak ass division.

Love the nicknames. 2-6 hitters getting it done tonight. 6-3 in the 4th inning. Long way to go.

OBP for the Month of May (min 13 PA, prior to tonight)

Wow in the 8th and only 4 posts in a game the Tigers are in it!.
And really boy only goes 3.2,

Hey they won, everybody else in the division lost, need about 70 more of those

Weird that this game thread isn't the lowest one with regards to post.. I know why but I won't say.. Okay I don't really know why but I have a theory.

NOTABLE:
Tigers left fielder Justin Upton left the game in the third inning with what the team described as a "mild right quad strain."

Matthew Boyd has a 10.13 ERA over last four starts. In 16 innings over that span, he's allowed 36 hits and 18 runs, while walking five and striking out seven.
Nobody will be happier to see May end than Tigers starter Matthew Boyd. It?s been brutal. Wednesday was his six start in the month. He came in 0-4 with a 6.92 ERA and 2.0 WHIP. Opponents were hitting .362 with a .560 slugging percentage and .970 OPS.
More of the same. He gave up three runs and four hits in the first inning

Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera hit his 530th double in the fourth inning, moving him past Al Oliver for sole possession of 41st place all-time. He is four behind Lou Gehrig for 40th place.
Cabrera is also two extra-base hits shy of 1,000.

The double by Nicholas Castellanos in the fifth inning was the 100th of his career. He's the ninth-youngest Tiger to reach that milestone, behind
Ty Cobb, Al Kaline, Hank Greenberg, Travis Fryman, Harvey Kuenn,
Barney McCosky, Harry Heilmann, Alan Trammell, Nick Castellanos.

Tigers reliever Warwick Saupold recorded eight consecutive infield groundouts in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before giving up his first hit, a single to Alcides Escobar.

Webvideo Highlights of the Tigers Win over the royals.

The win meant they returned home with a 25-28 record as the calendar turns to June. They had a 21-21 mark when they left Detroit in the wee hours of May 22. It wasn't ideal, but Wednesday's win combined with losses by the Twins and Indians meant that the Tigers lost one game in the standings over the course of the trip. They left town two games back in the division and return three games behind Minnesota and Cleveland.

Boxscore.

The Tigers play 12 of their next 15 in Detroit.

Roars:
J.D. Martinez: Continues functioning as the heart of the Tigers offense.

Alex Avila: Another bomb, more walks, Avila?s offensive production continues unchecked. The beard is so thick, so dark...so powerful. He also gunned down Alcides Escobar trying to steal second in the fifth. There was also a nice sliding grab of a pop-up beyond the visitors on-deck circle.
Alex Avila is just out of control right now. Entering tonight, best xwOBA of 365 hitters w 50 PA: of .494
https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/stat...unch_speed&sort_order=desc&min_abs=50#results

Warwick Saupold: The Tigers needed a great long relief appearance and they got one. Saupold had the Royals pounding the ball in the dirt with excellent location and a hard, sharp slider.
He's now pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in current stint w/ Tigers.

Hisses:
Matt Boyd: Just could not command anything once again, forcing him to come in with fastballs down in counts. The Royals didn?t hit him that hard, but they hit him often. May be time for a stint in Toledo to get himself sorted out.

My theory is the tigers aren't very good and people are losing interest.

That's a good theory. Not my theory but a good one. I'll be honest, the past couple-3 years these game threads are so freakin' negative. It's no fun anymore.. Team not playing well might have something to do about it but I think there's more to it than that.. That's my half baked theory..

On a side note: Does anyone else see the Twins staying on top? I'm not sure I do. As bad as it's been I think the division is wide open. They have to start hitting, right?

Cheers!!

The Twins have lost their last 4 and have a Pythagorean record of 22-27. Meaning, they have been more lucky then good. So no, they won't even be above .500 by season's end.

Pythagorean

CLE 28-23 .549 WPCT
CHW 28-24 .538 WPCT
DET 25-28 .472 WPCT
MIN 22-27 .449 WPCT
KCR 20-32 .385 WPCT

AL Total Pythagorean

HOU 38-16 .704 WPCT
NYY 30-20 .600 WPCT
BOS 29-23 .558 WPCT
TBR 31-25 .554 WPCT
CLE 28-23 .549 WPCT
CHW 28-24 .538 WPCT
TEX 28-26 .519 WPCT
TOR 27-26 .509 WPCT

BAL 25-26 .490 WPCT
LAA 27-29 .482 WPCT
DET 25-28 .472 WPCT
SEA 25-29 .463 WPCT
MIN 22-27 .449 WPCT
OAK 21-31 .404 WPCT
KCR 20-32 .385 WPCT

All six AL playoff teams from last year had a W-L Record better than .500 and Pythagorean Record above .500 at this time last year.

Very well could be that to, that's what happens when you become accustom to falling short all the time. negativity and cynicism sets in and the place becomes a hang out for unhappy people. it is what it is. Maybe the Lions will finally win a playoff game this coming season.

It's the bullpen. Can't depend on it, so even when it succeeds, it's still the bullpen.

It's hard to understand (the negativity) especially when the Tigers have largely been competitive.

The sports scene in general around here is not good. Red Wings just blew their postseason streak and looked awful, Pistons missed the playoffs and took a step back, Lions are the Lions, and the Tigers are mediocre at best after being a true WS contender a few years before. Really the team that gives me the most hope around here is actually the Lions and that's saying something.

In college MSU has taken a nose dive in football also. Only sports around here that feel like they have any sort of optimism are UofM football and MSU basketball.

I think the signs are there that the Tigers are probably going to get worse before they get better as well which doesn't help contribute to fan interest.
