THE DILEMMA.
Totally Tigers
Did you feel it?
Did you watch the game on Sunday?
Did it remind you of something?
Maybe must-see tv? Shades of Justin Verlander back when he was a Tiger?
It did for me.
Tarik Skubal was electric. He was a bulldog. He even seemed to inspire his teammates to play better. There were some outstanding catches that day.
And he threw a 101+ MPH pitch. Chris Fetter had to sit down after he saw it.
In almost every major pitching category, Skubal ranks in the top 5. In WAR, he is #1 with a 3.5. Almost every baseball analyst says he is currently the best pitcher in MLB.
He’s also the unanimous leading candidate right now as the most likely to win the Cy Young Award this year.
All great news, right?
Hmmmmm, maybe.
You see, Tarik’s trajectory doesn’t currently mesh with that of the Tigers. PoBO Scott Harris recently stated that the Tigers are at least 2 years away from building a foundation and core roster. They aren’t looking to add important free agents until they achieve those 2 goals.
Skubal becomes a free agent at the end of the 2026 season. And his agent is Scott Boras.
The Tigers are going to have a very tough decision to make – and probably before the end of 2026.
Skubal is the #1 starting pitcher every team wants, esp. those who play October baseball. The question to ask is whether his ascension will match the Tigers’ in 2 years. Will he still be at the top of his game when the Tigers are ready to contend?
The Tigers have 3 choices to make. Each with great risk – and great reward.
