MONDAY MUSINGS.

Today, it’s about quick hits – bits of news that catch my radar during the week as well as connecting the dots re ongoing stories. Even the quirky.
So let’s get to it! Here are the most interesting topics that hit my radar over the past week………..

Tigers Today podcast: Third of the way into 2024, there's good, bad and many questions. 37 minutes.

update: Jake Rogers since 4/22

TarikSkubal's 1.92 ERA is the lowest by a Tigers starting pitcher through his first 13 starts of a season since
Al Benton (0.99) and Hal Newhouser (1.83) in 1945.

Tarik Skubal has allowed a total of 18 earned runs in his last 17 starts and it's just completely ridiculous.

Change in approach powers offensive breakout for Tigers 2B prospect Hao-Yu Lee.
Lee’s first full season at Double-A looks like a roaring success.

THE DILEMMA.
Totally Tigers

Did you feel it?
Did you watch the game on Sunday?
Did it remind you of something?
Maybe must-see tv? Shades of Justin Verlander back when he was a Tiger?
It did for me.
Tarik Skubal was electric. He was a bulldog. He even seemed to inspire his teammates to play better. There were some outstanding catches that day.
And he threw a 101+ MPH pitch. Chris Fetter had to sit down after he saw it.

In almost every major pitching category, Skubal ranks in the top 5. In WAR, he is #1 with a 3.5. Almost every baseball analyst says he is currently the best pitcher in MLB.
He’s also the unanimous leading candidate right now as the most likely to win the Cy Young Award this year.
All great news, right?
Hmmmmm, maybe.

You see, Tarik’s trajectory doesn’t currently mesh with that of the Tigers. PoBO Scott Harris recently stated that the Tigers are at least 2 years away from building a foundation and core roster. They aren’t looking to add important free agents until they achieve those 2 goals.

Skubal becomes a free agent at the end of the 2026 season. And his agent is Scott Boras.

The Tigers are going to have a very tough decision to make – and probably before the end of 2026.

Skubal is the #1 starting pitcher every team wants, esp. those who play October baseball. The question to ask is whether his ascension will match the Tigers’ in 2 years. Will he still be at the top of his game when the Tigers are ready to contend?

The Tigers have 3 choices to make. Each with great risk – and great reward.

I think they should pray he stays healthy, wins the Cy Young, and trade him this off season.

"Two years away from building a foundation and a core roster." Why can't Skubal be a part of that? Because he's too good? And what guarantee is there that the Tigers will "contend" in two years? Sometimes, Holly forgets that CI is a miser who still smarts from allowing Avila to sign Baez. He's never going to back up the Brinks' Truck for any player ever again for an extended deal. So there are no "important free agents" coming to the rescue, because CI won't approve any long deals as other teams will offer them. So, the FA's the Tigers sign will be the misfits.

If what you say is true, all the more reason to trade him for a bunch of players this off season.
