George H.W. Bush, Passes Away

I don’t know what a PM is in this context. I’m not finding a specific definition for top model, there seems to be a reality TV show of that name.

Supermodel seems to be defined as someone who is a celebrity for their runway or print modeling and Kate Upton comes up on some lists as a supermodel.

It looks like there are 23 Soho clubs around the world.

sorry, the PM bit is not important. Should have just said another guy who overheard us. But if it helps, PM = portfolio manager. he sat in the same area as us (traders).

It was a number of years ago after her superbowl ad for Mercedes so my memory isn't clear, but I think by "top 10" the person who said it meant he would put her in his top 10 models or super models or just hot chicks of all time - something along those lines.

The place is the Soho House, not Soho Club (although they may be the same, don't know much about it). It's a hotel and private members club in the Meatpacking district. The members are mostly young jet setter types. this guy who said it was a member there.

In post 18 you quoted the PM guy as calling it “SoHo Club.”

Anyway the 23 worldwide SoHo houses appear to be private clubs, often also referred to as SoHo Club. Don’t know if there is a membership reciprocity or not.

I believe it was Groucho Marx who is famously quoted to have said “I would never be a member of any club that would have me.”

It was over 5 years ago, after the 2013 Super Bowl - I can barely remember what I had for breakfast yesterday so Club or House or House that's a club, it's in the ball park. I've never been to any of them but still thought the comment was pretty funny.

I would bet there is some reciprocity given what I know about the clientele at the one in NY - young, trendy, affluent jet setter types, and apparently plenty of attractive women, enough that Kate Upton wouldn't make the top 10 on a Tuesday afternoon.

it's not new. there is a day of remembrance after the death of every POTUS. Reagan died at 93 on a Saturday (I remember hearing it over the PA at the Belmont Stakes for Smarty Jones' failed triple crown attempt) and the gov't, markets, etc were shut down the following Wednesday.

We could get another in short order here - Carter is 94 and 2 months. GHWB just set the record for longest lived dead President at almost 94.5 breaking Ford's record of 93 and 165 days (Reagan flirted with the record but fell a month and half short, making it to 93 and 120 days). As they say in golf, Bush "has the lead in the clubhouse." Now we have to wait and see if Carter pulls a Jean van de Velde and blow this - the man could screw up a one man funeral so stay tuned.

yup, I heard that they have given government employees the day off for past dead presidents. I still think it's stupid. 99.9% of the millions of government employees aren't going to do anything special for GHWB...they are just going to accept the extra day with pay. :cheers:

~40 days off over the entire existence of the nation? I wish everything was so great that matters like this belonged on our radar.
 
I read this letter to Clinton in the past, but I was reminded of it today.

Dear Bill,

When I walked into this office just now I felt the same sense of wonder and respect that I felt four years ago. I know you will feel that, too. I wish you great happiness here. I never felt the loneliness some Presidents have described. There will be very tough times, made even more difficult by criticism you may not think is fair. I'm not a very good one to give advice; but just don't let the critics discourage you or push you off course. You will be our President when you read this note. I wish you well. I wish your family well. Your success now is our country's success. I am rooting hard for you.

Jefferson and John Adams died on same day, so the American taxpayer got a twofer on that deal.

I don’t know how long it’s been such a big deal made of the passing of a former president. In the days before modern transportation and communication technologies, it would seem that hauling the old stiffs back-and-forth across the country and notifying everybody of the schedule of events probably would not have been all that feasible.

And before they were televisions to enable government employees to watch the proceedings remotely, I don’t know how much point there would have been in giving everybody the day off.

Not really; they died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the republic, so I'm pretty sure the Gubmint was closed already. And among Adams's last words were "Jefferson still survives," but Jefferson had actually died a few hours earlier.

A. Lincoln was carted about the north from D.C. to Springfield, IL, through seven states, in a train ride lasted two weeks, so I think that might have been the first time. But I bet when Geo. Washington passed in his own stateroom, the nation may have noticed.

So they could smoke their cornsilk, drink their own popskull and reminisce about "them good old days."

This is the point? EXCEPT? The Bush memorial holiday is today, December 5, and the old guy died on November 30; so one would?ve thought that the Adams/Jefferson holiday would?ve been a few days later also.

And?

July 4 was not a national holiday until the Congress declared it one in 1870.

That was my uncle. He was always on his phone at a funeral. Probably his bookie. Or his GF half his age. Great guy but that darn phone.
