Just post anything you find.. He was something... I need to get his book.. Sounds like we had a dick for a owner in the 50's in Detroit and he was a cheapskate...

Playing into his 50's... That is something...

Posting a memory here: It was the summer of 1966. I was 9 years old and my 12 year old cousin from Westland was spending a week with my family in Harper Woods. Why? Because he was attending Gordie's hockey camp at Gordie Howe Hockeyland on Harper Rd. in St. Clair Shores ( it was torn down many years ago). I would go in the afternoons with my mom to pick my cousin up, and would beg her to go early to watch some of the instructional hockey, which featured Gordie and several of the Wings of that era (Gary Bergman, Alex Delvecchio among others). One time, when I was standing right at the fence in the corner (the rink had fence and not plexiglass at that time), Gordie saw my face peering through the fence just above the boards and skated up and smacked his stick on the fence above me, showering me with snow and saying "hiya kid".

I will never forget that moment.

That is a great story! What a thrill for you as a kid.

Damn that was some piece by Keith... very cool...thanks..

Wish I had talked to the man..I did see him once, I worked at an Ace Hardware store in Howell, MI. and he came in. I was maybe 19 or so and afraid to approach him. Just watching from a far.

I didn't start watching hockey until I was 8 or so, so 1973 thereabouts so I missed Howe with the Red Wings. But he was still tearing it up in the WHA, and played well at age 52, back in the NHL.

I remember the commercial featuring him and Olbermann. A true classic. I hope he's resting in peace and pain free.
