Gary Carter's death got me to thinking...

here is my top 10 catchers of all time...I highlighted those I saw play.

1. Johnny Bench
2. Yogi Berra
3. Roy Campanella
4. Mickey Cochrane
5. Ivan Rodriguez
6. Mike Piazza
7. Carlton Fisk
8. Gary Carter
9. Bill Dickey
10. Bill Freehan
 
11. Ted Simmons
12. Lance Parrish
13. Thurman Munson

Yeah, forgot about him I guess. He could go 10 or 11.
 
Both Freehan and Carter had 7 All-Star appearances, and Bill had 5 gold gloves to carters 3. Wish Bill had played a few more years to get his stats up there a bit more.. Both have identical Numbers just about.

Carter .262/.335/.439
Freehan .262/.340/.412

Gary just has more of the other stuff.. I had forgotten how many times Bill got hit by the pitch though...

The separator (sp) with Carter is his big game capacity. Two-time ASG MVP, the 1981 postseason, his World Series in '86, the big regular season hits. Not that the others were not clutch, but Carter did it more often in the spotlight.

Freehan was an 11 Time All-Star. Be hard pressed to find another player that isn't in the HOF. Freehan played during the 'pitchers era' too.
Freehan 112 OPS+ - Carter 115 OPS+
