guess who said "Bill Nye is as much a scientist as I am"

it's also pretty horrifying how much fallout and radioactivity was thrown into the air by all the testing done in the 50's and 60's...

the excuse from the US seems to be "aw cripes, how were we supposed to know radiation was harmful?"

Though at the time, I'm pretty sure we we making our 1st GMOs by radiating seeds to get mutations; so we clearly had some understanding. Then there's that old story of the scientist that dropped a sample, and the head guy told everyone to freeze where they were. Did some calcs, and said, everyone outside this circle, go get medical help, everyone inside this circle, call your families and say your goodbyes.

this reenactment isn't exactly like a described. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh89h8FxNhQ Both accounts are probably dramatized some.

yes. and when meltdowns and leaks of spent nuclear fuel become as common a daily occurrence as mass shootings in this country, Real estate prices (of whatever habitable land remains) will skyrocket.

I'm never surprised anymore how incompetent human-run organizations are... even those you'd otherwise expect to be competent. finding someone who will follow procedures on a daily basis no matter how routine they become, is nearly impossible. therefore I think it's FUCKING INSANE to expect nuclear plant engineers to be any different, and so get ready for lots more accidents, no matter how fool-proof their reactors are engineered to be.

the list of nuclear accidents (both civilian and military) is shocking. it's almost a miracle we're all still here.

Did you watch the Taylor Wilson video about changing how nuclear power is generated? It basically eliminates the possibility of large scale catastrophe, consumes nuclear waste we have lying around already, the reactors aren't much bigger than an SUV if that big but can power up to 100k homes, operate at ambient pressure so the material isn't seeking to escape in the event something goes wrong, and they are buried in the ground.

yeah, I've read about the Demon Core. they should've listened to Enrico Fermi.

check out the video "time lapse video of every nuclear explosion since 1945" ... our government was/is batshit insane.

the only reason I'm considering this credible is because gulo_socialist seems to think the technology checks out.

however, I contrast this with the German reaction to Fukushima. they went nuclear free because of that. if their new reactors were that safe why did they ban nuclear energy and go nuke free?

That's a good question, without googling, I tend to think Germany is a little bit knee-jerk in response to public pressure.

The salt reactors have good ideas and there's something called a travelling wave reactor that I think Bill Gates is pushing. I might be wrong, but I think the issue with both new designs is a materials problem. We need to develop new, stronger high-temperature materials to make these designs work. Traditional nuclear power cycles with all the waste, but passive safe shutdown already exists. These newer designs that eat up all the waste aren't quite ready yet.

well that's good to know that you think gulo knows more about nuclear technology than a guy who build a nuclear reactor in his garage at 14, is currently working on solving the nuclear fusion problem and improving fission in his spare time.

Also, good to know that you think a highly politicized and stupid move by the Germans is more meaningful than decades of data that prove nuclear energy is by far the safest currently viable means of generating our power needs.

Do you try hard to so consistently show everyone what an ignorant jackass you are or does it just come naturally?

Wilson estimates they can have a working prototype and be ready for production in about 5 years - compared to the 20 years he thinks we are away from solving the fusion problem, which I took to mean where power out is greater than power in so I assume we're even further away from commercially viable, market ready generation. Also, the molten sodium reactors are cheap, can be shipped and used just about anywhere - will fusion be accessible to the developing world?

Yeah, that's a big deal too, you have a sealed container the size of a shipping container and you bury it deep enough that if someone wants to dig it up, you can find out and get there before they can get to the reactor.

Apparently, Gates said his pilot plant should be completed in 8 years. Building in China.

I'm not sure if the pilot is traveling wave or not.

“The traveling wave reactor was the focus of our early work, and it’s still the baseline product of the company,” said Jeff Latkowski, the director of innovation at TerraPower, at the Oak Ridge event, a 50th anniversary commemoration of the original molten salt reactor experiment. “But we are looking at other projects that we believe address the three critical areas for nuclear power: safety, the environment, and costs.”

This suggestes as recently as last year, they were planning on the Chinese reactor being traveling wave:

Oh look at Mr. I-watched-a-TED talk-and-now-I'm-an-expert-on-nuclear-energy.

so stupid of me to not immediately believe everything said in a TEDtalk and instead wait until a third party confirms it.

In recognition of the progress of consumerism in China, The Chinese national People's Congress recently voted to intermix inanimate consumer items into the Chinese zodiac; I E, the year of the dishwasher, The year of the flush toilet, etc.

However, the year of the nuclear reactor is not going to occur until the year 2298.

Well, don't look to me to confirm it. I mostly just parrot what I hear in TED talks. I mean, I saw the Michigan nuclear reactor before it was decommissioned and that's the closest thing to an education on nuclear that I can claim. I have a textbook on the subject I'll probably never read. That's about it.

Makes sense, nuclear reactors are emotionally stable, slow to anger, and are most compatible with air conditioners and computers. They should avoid automobiles.

There's a little more than just the TED talk about Wilson and his work available on the web - I posted that link because it was was topical, succinct and not overly technical. I didn't think it was necessary to post more than that since everyone has access to the internet but for a second, I forgot how dumb you are. Sorry about that and thanks for the reminder.

I don't claim to know everything about nuclear energy - but as a former energy analyst, I've probably forgotten more about energy, power generation and distribution than you will ever know, so I know enough to make a reasonable judgement. But, even if I didn't, I'd at least know how to do a little homework and form my own opinion rather than waiting for Gulo to give it to me - no offense Gulo.
