Gunther = No QB Pressure

It's worse than I thought

http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...rence=ALL&role=OPP&season=2013&seasonType=REG

The Lions rank #26th in sacks so far, and 3 of those teams below them only have 4 games in as compared to 5. wow that is really bad Gunther.

Terrible... just awful. This is why the Defense get's torched in the passing game, D-Line is massively overrated and I blame Gunter for being too stale, predictable and the serious lack of blitz packages and it's more less been this way the whole time he's been here.

I'll post the rest when the full review comes out, but found this blurb in PFFs reaction blog.

"The Lions blitzed Rodgers on just one play. Perhaps going forward it might be something they try to do, with Rodgers completing 20-of-29 passes at 9.4 yards per attempt, achieving a 110.4 quarterback rating in the process."

Aren't the Lions much better getting pressure? At least I know the DT are high on the list in pressures..

Definitely need more blitzes but its not on Gunther alone. Schwartz came over as someone who didn't blitz much so its not a surprise he doesn't here..

If Schwartz is calling shots and not letting Gunther install more blitz packages then yea Schwartz gets the blame to.

The Lions have so much invested in the DL that they should be able to get pressure / sacks without blitzing

I would on the positive side say that DL does do pretty good stopping the run most of the time and we have seen much less over pursuing than in recent years. It's the serious lack of QB pressure that is mystifying, to be almost at the bottom of the heap in sacks is just not going to get it done. Given that we wouldn't want to sacrifice more QB pressure and sacks at the expense of stopping the run perhaps more blitz packages is in fact just want is needed.

Apparently not. Pressures, sure. Blitzes, no. But pressure alone doesn't work if the QB is still completing passes.

maybe it's the secondary letting WRs get open so fast that it doesn't allow enough time for the front 4 to get to the QB.

It was a fundamental failure to not blitz yesterday. That being said Rodgers is among the best in the NFL against blitzes so you have to pick your poison. We didnt create a ton of pressure yesterday but the Defense for the most part put this team in a situation to win but the offense never showed up. I am not mad at Gun for this that defense bent but did not break.

Its not just yesterday. We haven't blitzed in 4 plus years..

I never said it was. Our blitz packages are and have been atrocious. But we still dont have corner play that we can leave them on an island. With the front we have I would like to see Delmas getting blitzed up the middle more often. He is fast and a solid tackler but if it fails then we get hit deep. Then we would complain about ineffective blitzing. I think we need to do some different things but not sure how to make it work when we have been very successful with 4 down lineman. If we dont blow it against Arizona nobody cares that we laid an egg in one of the toughest stadiums to play in.

I would like to see it too but we just don't blitz. Its not science, it just ain't happening.

This isnt a panic button type situation. We have been winning games and playing well.

Choice 1. Don't blitz, Don't get pressure, get torched deep

Choice 2. Blitz, maybe get pressure, get torched deep.

I'd rather go down fighting...yesterday was a blowout and we made no adjustments at all the entire game....why do we even have a coaching staff?

Whole heartily agree in that one, in game adjustments have been horrible with this coaching staff..still trying to run up the gut with bush in the 4th Q down by two scores when it hadn't been working all day...I am wondering if this coaching staff is even capable of making adjustments from Q to Q when needed. They sure don't seem to be.

The whole lot is brutal. They'll do enough this year not to be fired which is sad when the bears fire a 10-6 coach for not being good enough. We have never outcoached another team and rarely if ever beat a team we're not supposed to.
