Gunther on the Hot Seat?

Another thing that bothers me about Gunther is his stupid use of the 4-3 defense against 3 and 4 WR...this was mentioned on some other boards as well but this is bad for so many reasons.

When you're in a 4-3 against 3 WR, you are telling the other team one of two things:

1) Youre going to send a blitz
2) you are going to play zone coverage

There are specific patters that work against this and are fairly easy to run...for example the Lions come out in 4-3 against 3 WR. Flynn recognizes this and checs out of the original play to a screen. The Lions blitz 2 out of the 3 LBs nd the screen pass goes for a 80 yard TD.

This happened again later in the game, the Lions used the same 4-3 defense against 4 WR. This forces dumbass Chris Harris to come up and play man. Flynn throws an easy pass to James Jones, 45 yards later another TD.

Two easy passes 125 Yards. Gunther has done this for 2 years. Everybody knows you cant run 4-3 against 3 wr...except him.

You CAN run a 4-3 vs 3 WR or even 4 WR sets. The problem Detroit has is you must have DBs who are able to cover the WRs and you need the DL to get serious pressure on the QB, which is why you are sending 4 guys instead of 3, because you believe you can get the pressure. The DL not getting pressure and the DBs not being able to sustain coverage longer than 3 seconds (if that) means you're gonna have a bad day, like when "you french fry'd when you should have pizza'd".

But fully agree Gunther should be on the hot seat next year.

If your personnel are unable to attain the missions you have sent them out to achieve, to the point where they are obviously outmatched, then you need to change things up. Gunther seems like a one trick pony when it comes to scheme.

He's not going to change either. At this age, this is who he is.

completely agree.. Gunther has been a huge disappointment and the schemes we are running aren't taking advantage of the talent. The D needs a new game plan.

He calls terrible blitzes that is so predictable that Matt Flynn can torch us.. Wide Nine can't stop the run very well... We need a infusion of different thinking.. i agree with all that you guys are saying... He has to go..

Wide nine would be ok if it was used only 20% of the time in certain situations. But freaking Gunther uses it all the damn time practically... I am so over that defense... This kids are suppose to be smart... Use multiple defenses... We finally were starting to get to Flynn a tad in the second half and low in behold Gunther calls a dumb blitz on third and 8....It was a terrible called blitz. Just like most of them today

Our front four is too predictable and we never bring enough heat outside the front 4. I'd like to hope they wrinkle it up for New Orleans but deep down I know that won't happen.

I think people are being too critical over one game.

Did we get carved up? Yes. Di we get carved up by a backup QB? Yes.

It's also a QB we sacked three times. How many sacks does a D-Line need to register in a game to be considered "doing their job"?

We had consistent pressure in the backfield. We had decent coverage over the top (regardless of what some want to say about Speivey).

The reality is that Matt Flynn made the throws he needed to make. They turned short passes into long plays on blitzes. They made plays.

I don't feel our defense was abused because they played badly. Our defense was abused by a damned good team who could be piloted by a damned good QB who's about to get a fat payday in free agency.

Dude this doesn't stem from just 1 game the QB pressure and wide 9 have been lack luster all year.

Thought the wide nine was Schwartz's scheme and The Gun was just making the best of it?

Either way I think the game may be passing the old man just a bit. So many teams throw the ball a ton that it almost makes sense to load up on good DB's and Dline and make the Nickel your base. Run variations of that with 5 DB's on the field.

My ideal plan would be to scrap Wright, then draft some variation of OG/OC, OT, and CB with our first 3 picks and go from there. I was feeling froggy about Alphonso Smith for a while but at this point I'm really not sure if he's gonna be anything more than an average 3rd corner.

22nd vs the pass
23rd vs the run.

neither is very good.

Wide 9 should atleast produce a high sack total from your DEs....our sack leader has 11. whoopidity doo.

If your not getting production from your DEs even when they start that far outside....then whats the point? it just means your DTs get eatin alive by double teams cause your DEs cant beat a 1 v 1.

The whole idea is garbage without an elite DE.

The Saints game will seal his fate.

There's no way in hell we should have given up almost 500 passing yards and 6 tds to their backup...and with their second best running back and arguably best receiver out. It was disgusting to behold. Bye bye Gunther.

In fairness, Avril beat his opponent just about every single play... if he was trying to beat him 5 yards behind the QB that is..

if the guy could simply learn how to counter the tackles momentum pushing that far up the field and simply just come underneath that or spin off of it theres no reason he couldnt be a 20 sack guy. Buuuut....its been like 3-4 years now and plain and simple...he only has 1 move....still....
