... So reports are that the Bears decision to bench Cutler was more about avoiding a clause in his contract than just benching a guy playing like crap.

Apparently Cutler has a clause in his contract that pays him an additional $10MM guaranteed if he is injured? How in the holy hell does a team give a QB with a long history of injuries EXTRA money if he can't play? Who comes up with this crap?

So the Bears are sitting him down to make sure he can't be injured, which will make him easier to trade next season.

Given the guy "tore his knee up" in the playoffs and then was walking up and down the sidelines joking with teammates, I can understand their concern. Cutler has been accused of faking injuries before. But again.. if you have a guy with a history or reputation for faking injuries... how do you give him a clause that pays him $10MM more if he gets hurt???

So it would seem the best way for the Lions to hurt the Bears long term this weekend... is to hurt Claussen. Knock him out of the game, and let Cutler pull up lame two plays later to collect his paycheck.. making him all but impossible for the Bears to cut or trade.

Wow, management in Chi-town may be even worse than the Millen years. That man was an epic moron, but at least he never found a way to do more damage than just plain old sucking. The Bears have set themselves up for cap hell and no talent for ... god, I don't even know how long.

Reading up on it a bit it looks like the contract extension he signed was really only guaranteed for $38M because of the clause. It appears that his salary for 2016 was ONLY guaranteed if he could not pass a physical. What this allows the Bears to do is get out of the contract with only paying 2 years or $38M. I'm sure the contract is insured so if he were to get hurt the Bears would not be on the hook for the $$

Here is what I read.

Though the $126 million number gets a great deal of attention, the only important part of Cutler’s contract is the first three seasons of the deal. This portion contains all of the guaranteed salary in Cutler’s contract and dictates what the Bears, or any team that acquires him, would be required to pay him. The first three seasons of Cutler’s contract are worth a total of $54 million. The Bears have already paid Cutler $22.5 million for the 2014 season. His 2015 salary of $15.5 million is already guaranteed. That means that if Cutler is released, the Bears are responsible for payment of that money.

Cutler’s $16 million in salary in 2016 is currently guaranteed for injury only, meaning if he is hurt and cannot pass a physical when released, he would also collect an additional $16 million. There is a further catch to this guarantee, however. On the third day of the 2015 League Year, which should be March 12th, $10 million of that $16 million becomes fully guaranteed, protecting his salary from any form of release. The remaining $6 million becomes fully guaranteed in 2016.

So, IF he's hurt, his 2016 money becomes more guaranteed, but not fully guaranteed.

Damn man, we all need an agent.

"If my client cannot perform his job duties, you have to pay him $10MM out of the $16MM, and if he can, you don't have to pay him a thing, but you can choose to".

Working in IT, if I could get a deal like that, I would scream carpal tunnel sooo fast... hehe. Still baffles me that you give a guy who is accused of faking injuries a deal like that. I get that it may actually work out for them, but that seems to me like the luck of hindsight.

If you feel you HAVE to build a clause like that in to protect yourself, you're signing the wrong guy to the wrong deal.

The way I see it is the Bears were putting in a clause that actually reduces the guaranteed money and if he was hurt it protects the player from getting released. Smart clause if you ask me.

The next clause "If you throw more INT than TD you get $20,000,000." That's coming..

HAHAHAH! If it was there now, it would make Cutler even harder to trade or release, cause he'd hit it for sure. The guy is a turnover machine these days.

Wind him up, get a free 6.

Hail Mary from Trestman. If he beats the Lions with Clausen he can say see I can win with any bum who isn't directly sabotaging things. IE like McCown last year. Fire Emery keep me.
