Imagine how good wed be without Leyland

actually the head bashing guy was just a reply in response to the thread in general. LOL.. I like the little head bashing guy.

Like I said, I don't think Leyland is bad. I don't see how he is the best, though. Most of his decisions are very questionable, and he's always struggled with managing a bullpen. Also relies too heavily on bench guys. His career win-loss record isn't all that great. In neither WS appearance have the Tigers been prepared. I base all this on my opinion of him as an average manager.

Of course this is all sarcasm, managers have little impact on outcomes. Leylands overall record is more indicative of the talent level of his players. There are common sense strategies like maximizing platoon advantages, defensive positioning based to spray charts, etc. All managers do this, playing the percentages. If I had a chance to either get the best manager in the game or get a slight war upgrade on the 25th man on the roster id for sure choose the player upgrade

I think that Leyland is a good veteran manager, but there have been quite a few games expecially early in the season when the ballclub was toying with C by C, that I disagreed with his choice(s) of RPs and closer(s) and became angry when his moves often blew up in his face. However he is a stubborn old coot and still does things (esp bunting) that make me shake my head in pure bewilderment. But perhaps over the course of a long season, the stupidity is cancelled out by the shrewd moves that he makes, I suppose.

A younger and less experienced manager might be prone to make more knee jerk reactions and snap decisions that could cost the team dearly long-term due to resulting injury or short term in losing more games...if he is even somewhat Ozzie-like and gets under the skin of his players and/or blurts out things better left unsaid or kept in-clubhouse about the team and players to the sports MSM and via social media like Twitter.

There are likely few current MLB managers that are Smoke's equal, and there are always things going on with the players in the clubhouse that we Tigers fans will rarely if ever be privy to. So we have to put up with Jimmy's quirks and warts, for example his country-bumpkin, hick-like sputtering/muttering postgame pressers held often while spraying bits of his mouthful of food from the postgame spread by chewing and talking at the same time..ick!! Along with his infrequent, late Sparky-like etched-in-stone declarations that later on wind up happening (or not) anyway. For one of the best examples, his post and off-season insistence that Jose Valverde would NOT be resigned by the ballclub,, while acting like he was so aggravated and insulted that the ink-stained wretches had even DARED to ask him those questions about the possible return of Papa Grande.

C by c is the smartest way tp manage a pen, agents get in the way with save numbers. As for bunting, I dont like bunting but the defense needs to respect the possibility of a bunt so that effects positioning. Same thing w stealing, you have to run your slower guys to keep 1b on the bag.

the sarcasm was Sbee Tom.

The head bashing was over you not getting it.

I knew Sbee was being sarcastic...I didn't know why you were bashing your head into the wall. I thought maybe you were bashing your head because you think JL is a terrible manager.

Who was the poster who starting doing fake Brandon Inge quotes and had people falling for them? Byco or did someone start that before him?

That was funny as hell. Because I could see Inge doing those himself..

Getting back on topic....

Was I the only one that questioned Leyland using seven pitchers in that three run, 10 inning game last night?

I really hate when he over-manages games.

Such a joke. People greatly overestimate the impact of manager

I don't over estimate Leyland, he is mediocre to average, and a complete waste in utilizing a bullpen.

In game decisions are not what make a good manager but most Tiger fans don't get it.

Really? Do we have a lights out bullpen? Hes as good as the arms he has to call on. The bullpen is good if the starters go 6 or 7.

Its also funny this gets bumped during a game where we give up 19. If we had joe maddon. He would have used the pitchers better and we'd be up 4-3

Tigers could have Rivera, Gossage, Fingers, Radatz, Hiller, and Leyland would still f'k it up.

Sure, he butchered the handling of the staff in the 6th inning (porcello probably shouldnt have started the inning, he definitely should have been pulled after the leadoff walk, and al al should never have set foot on the mound), but leyland isnt the one who gave up 8 homers and 20 runs. every single pitcher he put into the game gave up multiple runs. he cant make the pitchers not throw meatballs up there. this game was far, far more the pitching's fault than anything leyland did.

Glad its still a 6.5 game lead... Should be 10-15 but heck at least smokey likes the RBI stat!!!! I really could care less unless he loses the WS again.. 1-8 in the biggest stage suggests being out managed. Or not having your team ready.. But who knows maybe they blow this 6.5 game lead that should be over 10 and we can fire him... Or better yet he wins the WS, and then he can get a free pass and pitch Bo Derek whenever he wants.....
Either way its a win win for me...
