No vegas line on this one since it's FCS vs FBS, i'd guess 30 is a safe number. Jacksonville state is a quality FCS opponent, they went deep in the playoffs last year and should be good again.

I think MSU comes out a hair over excited and they're a little sloppy, breaking in new starters, guys at new positions, etc. I know JSU is a poor team against the rush so we should control the clock and score some points. I think this is a good tune up for Oregon, MSU wins but not as easily as we'd think

MSU 38
JSU 17

J'ville state didn't exactly go deep - they won the equivalent of a play in game and then beat a 6 seed. I hope you're being overly conservative because if they score 17, Oregon could hang 50 on us.

MSU 45 (maybe 38 if someone drops a pass in the end zone or on 3rd and long)
J'ville St 3 (maybe 10 if they get a garbage TD late in the 4th)

I think maybe they get a TD in the first half and then maybe another against our 2nd string defense, that's where I got 17.

as for hanging 50, i've heard that all summer. the last team to score 50 on us was Wisconsin in 2003. we haven't given up 30 in a regulation game since 2011, Oregon is a special offense but we have a special defense year in and year out.

That's fair - lot of teams did score on their opening (IU, Ill, Mich and Stanford) or second drives (NW, Y'town St) against us last year.

I'm not saying Oregon will hang 50 on us - just that the Ducks are way more of a threat to score than the Gamecocks. But as good as our defense was, we lost 6 starters and some experienced backups and even that unit struggled against mobile quarterbacks. Oregon also has a solid running back and only one underclassman on their highly touted line. I'm definitely worried about that game.

if by worried you mean fairly certain we'll lose, i'm worried as well. I don't think we'll be able to handle the speed of their offense and they'll keep us off balance. I wonder about guys like LT that haven't played a ton on those long drives that you don't get to sub.

I did read that Narduzzi said that Jones is starting to look like a first round draft pick, if he plays at that level and LT is as good as all the coaches say then we could be nasty on defense.

And I'll add that if anyone on this year's schedule is going to set a multi-year scoring record against our defense, it's Oregon. Really having no idea what to expect, a number north of 40 would not be a big surprise to me. My 95% confidence interval for that game is pretty wide - something like 30 to 55

Not to mention there is a distinct home field advantage in college football.
