The Detroit Lions are signing quarterback Jared Goff to a four-year, $212 million contract extension that includes $170 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.

The deal makes the former No. 1 overall pick the highest-paid player in franchise history.

The $53 million average annual salary in Goff's new deal makes him the second highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, behind only the Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow ($55 million).

Well earned. Sure it will be smart deal by Lions

Lions have lots of cap space this year and 2025 and can make it work. He probably only plays here 3 more seasons and the end is fluff

95 million in space in 2025 before Goff deal. They had the room. Went cheap at CB with draft picks which is nice and Branch last year. Cheap all pro TE. Cheap RB in Gibbs. Hutch cheap until 2026 probably and then they backload to 2027. Campbell replaces Barnes

Decker and McNeil need smart deals now

Zeitler will become a cheap guard next year. Same with Glasgow as he gets older. Ragnow will just play out his deal probably. Reader will play out the 2 years and be replaced.

53 per seems high but signing bonus over 5 years plus the extra year this year so it won't be bad until 2026/2027 or they have the room to absorb bigger hit in 2025 too. We'll see if they reduce his 31 million cap hit this year and get some carryover too.

It's obviously a bit more than I thought he'd get, but it's also not surprising. He earned his money, and now he has to live up to it. If you think you have a guy who can win you a Super Bowl you lock him up period.

It'll be similar to Stafford in that it seems like crazy high money now, but in a couple years he'll probably be like the 10th highest paid QB again.

This is about what was expected. Not a big deal. Cap is going to keep going up every year.

It’s a lot of money, but what choice do you have? They’re definitely in win now mode for the next few years.

The deal is fine. Now go win the Super Bowl. By year three he won’t even be in the top 5-10 highest paid quarterback in the nfl. The window is now.

Goff getting that kind of $$$ probably guarantees the Lions won't win a SB.

Right now he's the #2 highest paid guy, barely behind Burrow. We've had this big cap spike though. It's crazy to say, but 50 million a year may end up being middle of the pack quarterback money in the next couple years.

for a middle of the pack quarterback :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

If Goff deserves 50 mill, he doesn't btw, Dak should get about 65+ mill.

In 2014 the cap was 133 million. In 2019 it was 188 million. 2024 it's 255 million. It nearly doubled in just the past 10 years.

People are focusing too much on the $53 million raw number. The more important figure is what percentage of the salary cap he eats up. Anyone have those projected percentages over the course of the contract? I am by no means a cap guru.

I believe I read that once a QB starts taking up 20% or more of your salary cap then the team is in trouble because now you truly can't build a good team around him. Most Super Bowl winnings QBs have been in the mid teens percentage wise of the salary cap I believe.

$255.4 million - $53M - seems just slightly over 20%. Is that mean they're in trouble?

What's funny about that? 0.o

I mean hell, CBS Sports just made an article for QB power rankings this week: 2024 NFL QB Power Rankings: Brock Purdy, Jordan Love crack top 10, Daniel Jones lands at bottom

Let's say middle of the pack is #16. On their list, that would be Stafford. Looks like he's making 40 mil. Danny Dimes is actually at the very bottom of their list (no surprise), and he's making 40 mil as well. :p

So, yes. Mediocre mid-tier QBs will definitely be getting that 50 mil/yr very soon. Probably more.

On 97.1 today in Detroit he said the biggest thing he wanted was a no trade clause.
He wants to finish his career in Detroit.
