The Verlander bar has been set: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/02/mariners-hernandez-agree-to-seven-year-deal.html

Get StartedYeah it's very likely we see Verlander sign something around 7/180-185m now
Both pitchers were still under contract for 2 more seasons. Felix is 3 years younger then Verlander however I don't believe Justin would sign basically a 3 years extension that in itself is not going to happen and that is basically what you are saying.
Felix's new deal voids the final 2 years\39.5m of his old deal and replaces it with a 7 years deal with a full no trade clause. He raised his salary in 2013 and 2014 from 19.5 and 20m to an annual 25m.
I would suspect Verlander to sign an extension instead of basically a new contract. 5 year 125m extension as you stated would have his grand total to 7 years 165m total.
Let's not forget in 2009 Verlander signed his 5/80 extension 2 weeks after Felix signed his 5/78 extension.
I think he wants to be the highest paid RH pitcher in all of baseball which honestly he should be and to do that it would at least take an extension of 5 years 140 million pushing his grand total to 7 years 180 million.
To quote Teddy KGB.....pay that man his money.
There is a point of no return.
If Verlander isn't willing to give the Tigers a discount, then I say let him walk. Loyalty works both ways.

Because I see no reason why Verlander won't continue to go on busting up hitters like he's done for the past several seasons.
I have no problem paying top dollar during a player's prime years (26-32).
Name one player that received top dollar, long term contract after the age of 32 (Verlander will be 32 to start the 2015 season) that "earned" the entire contract.
At 32, Verlander could be signed to 7 years as his "last" contract. But, I would have the later years as option years and/or only kick in if certain criteria was met. There is no way I would give him 7/$175 Mil straight up. Maybe 7/$140 Mil with incentives and option years. Ultimately, if he continued to perform, then he could have a chance at $175 Mil, or more. I would not give players over 31 guaranteed monies past 5 years.
