Let the comparisons begin

In an unbiased opinion I just think I would rather have OSU's 40-something point shut out 10 times out of 10 if we're talking about being impressive. If you switched Michigan's game with OSU's game I feel like you'd all be saying how OSU gave up an opening drive td, left WR's open, had a hard time stopping their opponent on 3rd downs, if it werent for turnovers n blah blah blah. I'm happy with Michigan's win but I think OSU (especially under noted circumstances) was more imprssive. Thats all.

O$U played Akron...a team which went 1-11 the previous year, who's offense was by a true freshman. I think U of M probably would have held them scoreless...

And if they did, I'd be impressed with UM's win.

So here is what I found impressive in the OSU and Michigan games.

For OSU: They seemed to be be in sync despite losing a big senior class, having a new coach, having 10 players from what would be the two deep out for injury or suspension, and having another three players that would have been in the two deep transfer or go in the supplemental draft. In this game it was all about showing they could work well as a team regardless of who was in the game. Normally, I wouldn't even think about this but I was concerned since we now have a 38 year old first time head coach.

For Michigan: There were a couple of things really. On offense I was impressed that Borges was willing to mix up the offense to implement his system while at the same time allowing Denard to do what he does best. I was surprised but I think it is a good move as long as he does what he can to keep Denard healthy. On Defense, it was good to see adjustments (moving the corners up, pressuring the QB, etc). It seems like the coaching staff is willing to plan around the strengths of the players instead of trying to force a system. I think the players responded well especially since that first couple of WMU drives were pretty tough.

the biggest thing I took away from ohio's game is that they have enough talent that they can go far just by playing a very vanilla game.

I assume Bauserman has been confirmed as the starter for the remainder of the season (?), and I think that choice would be best with a guy like Fickle as coach. If Tressel was still there, they would probably try to work in Braxton more.

Akron was absolutely terrible though. They provided absolutely no challenge to ohio whatsoever. I saw all I needed to after a 3rd and 2 play in the 2nd Q; they lined up in a shotgun, and their QB couldn't even keep the ball within 5 yards of a receiver on a quick slant. They might as well disband their team and go play intramurals somewhere.

I think the jury is still out on ohio's coaching situation, and how they work with eachother. an easy win like Akron is not going to reveal much... need to see how they handle adversity.

At least you're consistent, unlike SOME people here.

only score margin counts in your book. You're a busy man; you don't have time to deal with such nuanced points as "strength of schedule" or "quality of the opponent."

1 week, 1 game. Michigan's win was good but I didn't come away as impressed as I was with OSU. I'm not an idiot, I know Akron isnt as good as WMU but I'm not gonna act like WMU is some prolific offense and Michigan bending but not breaking against them was awesomely imprssive either. Is it wrong to be more impressed by a 40+ point shut out with 10 suspended players, a new coach and starting qb against a mac school in opener? I have to be more impressed with Michigans win vs a mac school instead?

Yes.

...or at least acknowledge that Akron might possibly be one of the worse teams in the country, and ohio might have been challenged as we were if they had to play a half-decent MAC team with a solid veteran QB.

honestly, I can say I was more impressed with our win, but that's probably the fan in me talking to some extent. I do know that I watched the 1st half of the ohio game, and wondered if ohio was that solid, or Akron was that bad. then I looked up their record last year and said "Yikes."

Not much going on there. Similar to a 40 point Carr-era win over EMU.

Noter Dame bandwagoneer in the office says, "I'm sick of noter dame scheduling all these tough OOC opponents when ... no offense, Michigan, Ohio State ... all you guys schedule these cupcakes to start with!"

"Uh ... you guys lost to Tulsa recently. Go **** yourself you non-conference belonging, scheduling USF as a cupcake that turned out not to be a cupcake!!"

He doesn't want any tough OOC opponents? He does realize every single one of their games is OOC, right? Whoa.

Good thing the Big 10 doesn't have to play every military school in the country either. ::)

Funny how Army, Navy, Air Force ... Stanford and even Nebraska are "traditional rivals" when they're down but suddenly they're an incredibly challenging OOC schedule when they're okay ..?!
