Tigers to retire Leyland’s number:

The Tigers announced yesterday that they plan to honor recently-inducted Hall of Fame manager Jim Leyland by retiring his number 10 on Saturday prior to the club’s game against the Royals. The game starts at 6:10pm local time that evening but Detroit encouraged fans to arrive early and be in their seats by 5:25pm local time for the retirement ceremony in a press release about the retirement ceremony.
Leyland’s number will be the tenth to be retired in Tigers history,
joining numbers 1 (Lou Whitaker), 2 (Charlie Gehringer), 3 (Alan Trammell), 5 (Hank Greenberg),
6 (Al Kaline), 11 (Sparky Anderson), 16 (Hal Newhouser), 23 (Willie Horton), and 47 (Jack Morris).

Leyland joins Anderson as the only manager in Tigers history to have his numbers retired. In his eight years managing the Tigers from 2006 to 2013, Leyland won 700 games and a pair of AL pennants.

Former Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland – who was enshrined into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 21, 2024 – will see No. 10 retired in his honor by the organization. Leyland’s No. 10 will become the 10th number retired in Tigers history, and just the second number of a manager, joining Sparky Anderson, who’s No. 11 was retired by the organization in 2011. Leyland is one of three managers in Tigers history to win at least 700 games with Detroit, and the only skipper to lead the Tigers to postseason berths four times in his career.

Of particular note is a discussion among fans about whether it was proper to give his name and number such prominence on Comerica’s walls. Based upon the fact he never won a World Series with the Tigers like Sparky Anderson and also Mickey Cochrane who are both up on the wall.

The Tigers moved the names of Harry Heilman, Heinie Manush, Sam Crawford, Hughie Jennings, Mickey Cochrane, George Kell and Ernie Harwell further to the left, stacking them close together, 3 deep. The font size of their names is smaller and none of them have their jersey numbers listed. Some of them played before 1921 when numbers weren’t used but others did have regular jersey numbers.

Leyland’s number was put to the right, just before Sparky Anderson’s. Both the size of their names and listed numbers match those of Willie Horton, Ty Cobb (no number), Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Hal Newhouser, Al Kaline, Jack Morris, Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker.

While Leyland does have his followers, some fans questioned the size and prominence of his name and number, considering he never won a World Series with the Tigers, as Sparky did. And the fact that he went into the Hall not choosing a team logo – when he could have picked the Tigers – made some fans upset.

I might not have went that option but the 3 she gave all suck. Make it smaller based on contributions, lol. Imo, he needed to be there longer, esp. no WS win. If he coached another 10 seasons with us then maybe I can see. Maybe I am in the "who gives a shit" option.

I was wondering why some of the Tigers greats names are smaller than the other Tigers greats names?
Keep them all the same size.
I think his number being retired has something to do with him still with the team in the front office.
His name on the wall would have been plenty, imo.
