Leyland retires....Voted into Baseball HOF... Tigers will retire uniform # 10

Several days ago, former manager Jim Leyland decided that he would not wear any team cap when he gets inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer. The other 3 inductees, Andrian Beltre, Joe Mauer and Todd Helton will be wearing Rangers, Twins and Rockies caps respectively.

Leyland joins Tony LaRussa as the only other manager inducted not to have a team logo on his cap. Sparky Anderson went into the Hall wearing a Reds cap despite being fired by them and spending almost twice as much time managing the Tigers.

Leyland managed 4 teams:

Pirates – 11 years w/only 4 seasons above .500

Marlins – 2 years w/a World Series Championship

Rockies – 1 year

Tigers – 8 years w/2 AL Pennants

.506 winning percentage and one WS title. I guess they are WAY more liberal with their criteria for managers than players (see Lou Whitaker)

I agree his numbers are just so .500 ish, and Sweet Lou should be in.

Later this summer, the Detroit Tigers will be retiring Jim Leyland’s #10 jersey number. He will be only the 2nd manager to have his number retired after Sparky Anderson.

It will be the 9th retired number by the Tigers. Leyland will join Anderson, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, Willie Horton, Al Kaline, Jack Morris, Hal Newhouser, Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker.
Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford, Mickey Cochrane, Ernie Harwell, Harry Heilman, Hughie Jennings, George Kell and Heinie Manush are also on Comerica’s wall but without numbers. Most of them because they played before jerseys included them.

Leyland is going into the Hall of Fame and requested that he not go in wearing the logo of any of the 4 teams he managed in his career.
He managed the Pittsburgh Pirates for 11 years, followed by 2 years with the Florida Marlins, 1 season with the Colorado Rockies and finally 8 years with the Tigers. He won a World Series with the Marlins and took the Tigers to 2 World Series where they lost both contests.

Sparky managed the Tigers for 17 years and also took them to the World Series, which they won in 1984.
Leyland will be inducted into the Pirates’ own personal Hall of Fame this summer (along with 2 other players) which was established almost 2 years ago. However, his number will not be retired.

The most famous Tiger player to wear #10 was Tommy Bridges who wore it for 15 years. He was one of baseball’s best pitchers, a 6-time All-Star and holder of numerous pitching records. Some of his achievements still stand within the franchise and also MLB. He played in 4 World Series and also left in order to serve his country during WWII, returning to the Tigers after the end of the war.
