Lions decline Fairley's 2015 option

And to think it could have been Robert Quinn instead.....

At that time DE was pretty set after 2010 season, but so was DT with Suh and Corey Williams. We'll see what a motivated Fairley can give the Lions.

Fairley gets on my fucking nerves. I don't know if Mayhew's tactics are good for the situation but why in the FUCK would a guy need motivation to make all the big money he's gonna make (for the rest of his life) in the next 5-6years? I mean damn, every game isn't gonna be the national championship game and you still have to do your part. For the money he's making you can shit on my neck and I'd still bust my ass like there's no tomorrow, but that's just me smh.

Fairley tries during games, but offseason not so much. Fairley has some great games but lots of inconsistent play.

Whatever the Lions do with Fairley after this season probably hinges on Suh. I can't see them devoting a ton of cap space to two DTs. If Suh re-signs, I don't think we'll see Fairley on this team next year regardless of how he plays. If Fairley plays well, that immediately benefits the Lions in 2014, hopefully netting him a large contract elsewhere (or signs here for cheap, pipedream I know) so the Lions get a comp. pick out of it. If Fairley remains inconsistent, they can move on and get a younger/cheaper option in his place.

My only worry is that he plays extremely well for all of 2014, the Lions throw money at him, and he becomes inconsistent again.

At times his conditioning hurt him during games and caused him to be inconsistent. If he did a better job in the offseason getting in shape, then he could really play well in games.

Is this usual to have options not picked up? I thought they'd wait into the season at least.

Had to decide by May. And this is the first year of this with the new rookie CBA implemented in 2011. This is Fairley's 4th year with a 5th year option.

It will be nice to have this option for Reiff for 2016 and Ansah for 2017.

not familiar with the new contract....can they begin to negotiate an extension now? or are they just saying we will wait and see what happens after this year?

Now Suh and Fairely both walk after the season. Warm up the Aaron Donald train.

They can begin to work on a new deal any time.

Basically this means that if they don't sign him before next March, he's an unrestricted free agent automagically. No qualifying tender can be made.

This is a kick in the ass to Fairley, but right now it means nothing. He knows he's on the hot seat, and the team wants him to play.

I suspect they will come to term on an extension around mid season. But he's going to have to show up for camp in better shape, and maintain it.

That happens and this franchise takes a plunge. Not a step backwards, but a full out somersault-cannonball plunge. Losing a superstar DT and a very good DT would be disastrous. Then say Donald comes to town, right? The pressure on this kid would be astronomical I think.

My take. Fairley has a good year but the Lions let him walk..oh well. You lock up Suh first and foremost.

Aaron Donald train my ass, bro....noooooooooo.

Great motivation for Fairley. Nothing bad comes out of this if you think about it. Fairley plays lights out. Do you pay him? He plays like shit on a contract year. See ya!!

As a GM, I'd rather have the option of signing a stud player than letting someone go.

2 things can happen:

this turns fairley into a fat bitch and hes demotivated all year. Hes gone next year.

this turns fairley into someone realizing hes playing for new money on a contract year. He turns into hulk and smashes people. We extend him.

well....3....he has a career year and wants to test FA and goes to the highest bidder. not extending suh actually hurts here....cause if it was a guarantee that hed be playing next to suh....I think theres more of a chance he would want to stay. what idiot wouldn't want to play next to suh???
