Lions keep Gunther around

Not really such a bad idea, somewhat like Ausmus retaining Lamont on the Tigers coaching staff, at least until the new regime settles in anyway, and familiarizes itself with the team.

Hopefully its only for the short term...ie...'14 and then bye-bye.

Is he like the crazy old Janitor that they plan on killing off before the big game?

Makes sense sort of, after the season there were players going to management trying to save the coaches, gotta think they were talking about gun and that is why he is still around. Don't let him make any decisions.

Throwing him a bone for some reason. Senior assistant? lmfao...he'll have next to zero input on games. But of course the board negative Nancies put on a full panic attack. Like clockwork smdh

I'd rather he be gone altogether. But if he has absolutely ZERO impact on defensive philosophy and playcalling, then I'm ok with it. He seems like one hell of a cheerleader. Maybe he can focus on that.

I like the move for the most part. Never hurts to have a set of experienced eyes evaluating talent and providing one on one instruction for development.

what about a set of senile eyes that had failing defenses in Kansas city and Detroit? Suuuureee...lets keep another failure on staff mayhew. Just surround yourself with failures....that's a great business model!

In reality, they'll probably just let Gunther stick around, roam the facilities and collect a paycheck. Kind of like that guy in Office Space.

as soon as i saw this thread, I had the exact same thought, bro. I knew somebody would have to say something. The guy will have ZERO control. Not calling plays. Who gives a fuck.

yeah... no big deal.... Make him he gopher for coffee and snacks...

"Believe it or not, a lot of my background goes through Oakland," he said. "I learned a lot from Al Davis about players and the patience you have to have to have to develop good players."
Great...just great. Not too excited to keep him in the organization, but at least he's not calling plays anymore.

makes sense....al davis sucked at player development....no wonder why lol. Staying status quo and playing the same guys over and over will get you nothing but losing more games than you win...again. Take Houston for example.....if we want to get better he shouldn't see the field. A new coach and staff gives me a small bit of hope that changes for the better will be made where you struggled....like cb play. Esp since you hired a secondary coach as dcord. But then you confuse it by keeping a guy like Gunther on staff. Just doesn't make sense to me...

That's more or less what I thought, lol. Firing a guy, only to retain him at a lower position in the organization doesn't make much sense to me. And like Mitch just said, the first thing I thought when I read that quote was the Lions taking a speed-demon who is extremely raw (Al Davis strategy).

The entire organization is becoming notorious for it lol....its really a sick joke.

millen sucked....hire his assistant mayhew
shack harris sucked....let him keep a position when xanders gets here
Gunther sucked....let him be a senile assistant to the janitors

rewarding/keeping mediocrity around gets you nothing....
