For most of his first two NFL seasons, Ndamukong Suh has played left defensive tackle, lining up next to Corey Williams in the middle of the Detroit Lions' defensive line.
But at the Lions? third open practice of the spring Monday, Suh took several snaps at right defensive tackle, a look defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said he ?probably? will use more this year.
?Warren will be happy; I?m going to move him all over the place now,? Cunningham said. ?As a matter of fact, I showed him some of Warren?s tape. Warren should be really happy.?
NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp complained at the Super Bowl that the Lions were too predictable in how they used Suh last season, when Suh?s sack total fell from 10 to four.
Sapp said he even texted Lions general manager Martin Mayhew after one game, imploring the team to move Suh around more.
?I like Martin Mayhew, so I?m like, ?Somebody want to put him on the right side a little more??? Sapp said. ?Jesus, you put the man in a position where he?s here, and now people have wham blocks and all that because they know he?s right there every time. When I was (alternating sides), you had to map this thing out.
?He?s right there every time. I?m like, ?Come on, Gunther, stop it.? And then you put (Nick) Fairley behind him? Oh, so we don?t get to see them side by side??
Suh, the Lions? first-round pick in 2010, and Fairley, their first-rounder in 2011, played together sparingly last season, after Fairley broke his foot in training camp and was hobbled most of the year. Fairley took second-team reps at left defensive tackle Monday, and the two should play together more this year.
Of Suh?s 14 career sacks, four have come when he lined up at a position other than his normal left defensive tackle. Last year, Suh had one sack on a three-man rush on a Hail Mary play against the Kansas City Chiefs and one from right defensive end in a regular-season-ending loss to the Green Bay Packers. As a rookie, he had sacks as a stand-up rusher against the Washington Redskins from right defensive end and the New England Patriots from a few yards off the line of scrimmage, like a linebacker.
?Warren played both sides,? Cunningham said. ?I told Martin to call Warren and tell him I still love him.?
Note: The Lions released wide receiver Jared Karstetter to make room on the 90-man roster for receiver Maurice Stovall, who signed a one-year deal Monday.
