Lions sign 5 of 7 draft picks

Wonder if they have the cash to sign their top 2. Or if they need to restructure someone...

The money shell game works magic for the ones controlling it as always. Lol.

I sure like the current rookie wage scale as opposed to how it used to be.

They need about 1.1 in extra space to fit both of them. They have 2.4 right now.

Then they'll need another 1.8 when they switch to top 53 and count PS.

Doesn't have to be restructure. Ngata extension will do the trick.

Ngata extension wouldn't change anything for this upcoming year. His 2015 cap hit for us is strictly base salary. An extension does nothing to change his 2015 number unless it's an extension that includes a 2015 restructure.

So sounds like they can get everyone in for camp, but will need to make some adjustments before the 2015 season starts.

It would change his cap number and add years. It could very well lower his cap number depending on the structure.

3 year 36 million extension (12 per). 12 million Signing bonus (really spread out over 4 years since he's under contract).
Base could change to 1 million this year with the new deal.

12/4=3+1 million base. That is a 4 million cap number for 2015 instead of 8.5.

4 million 2015
5 million base +3 = 8 million cap number 2016
7 million base +3-10 million cap number 2017
11 million base+3=14 milion cap number 2018

I'm not for extensions without actually seeing the guy play here..going from a 3-4 to a 4-3.

So you are against free agency?

When you have Gym Shorts getting a undeserved extension and Matt Stafford getting paid too much after one great year..ya. He's been in a 3-4 for sometime so I'm a little weary.

Schwartz and Stafford both deserved their extensions at the time prior to 2012. Stafford earned it since then. Technically most of the extension starts this season for Stafford. 3 year extension (2015-2017).

Stafford's cap number was high due to the restructures and old CBA, not the new contract.

That's why we all have opinions. You can say Matt is worth it and Gym deserved it. I disagree.

2011 playoff year. Prior to 2012 before a lame duck year, you can see why he was extended. At the time, summer of 2012, you have to agree with that. And with the turnovers, penalties and just not having that one extra 4th Quarter play in 2012/2013, you can see why he was fired. NFL, Not for Long.

Stafford's deal is cheaper than most of the new QB deals. That is fact. Old rookie deal and restructures make people blind to this fact.

Rodgers, Flaccos, Big Ben, Brees, Matt Ryan and Peyton Manning got significanlty more. Brady did earn much more for many years but just took a very cheap deal at the end of his career (9 per).

Kaepernick, Romo and Cutler got more per year recently. And some of them didn't have extra years like Stafford did for the signing bonus.

Palmer (age) and Dalton got a little less. Alex Smith was close at 17 per.

Eli, Rivers, Wilson, Luck, Newton and Tannehill all on the horizon and I'm sure will be more than 17.6 per.

So you are restructuring his 2015 year.

That is what happens with extensions. The base salary goes away due to the signing bonus.

His cap number could be 4 million lower. We really don't need all that 4 million but it would carryover to 2016. Even you have to keep the 8.5 base due to Ngata demanding (you can still spread it around with a new deal in place). So the cap number will definitley be lower.

Mayhew said they will start working an extension once Ngata is settled. We will see what comes out of it.

And I checked with the Lions beat writer and his franchise tag number is the normal DT tag number, not 20 million for 2016. So franchise is an option. Lots of options for Detroit.

Simple restrucutre of Tate or Quin would do the trick. Gives us 2 million and adds like 800 k to each of the remaining years. Not a big deal with the Lions at 35 under for 2016 right now.

I would restructure Tate or Quin if they needed money. Both are on reasonable contracts and pushing out some into future years doesn't really hurt the lions in anyway. They should both be productive at the end of their contracts.

I'm against doing anything with Ngata, he will still command to be paid at near the top of DT salaries, to big of a risk at his age. Franchise tag for DT should be just south of 10 million for 2016. That is a good option if he plays well here in Detroit in 2015.

Agreed on the restructure not being a big deal.

Yeah 10 million would be fine for a franchise number in 2016. Though Suh's deal probably makes that number higher. Screwed again by Suh.
