I know they didn't have shit to do but I would think they wouldn't have the money to go.

It was a nickle, for like two movies and cartoons. Even that was cheap. Poor people do stuff too.
This is how a lot of people got their news too. This is back before people had TVs, computers, video games, etc. in their homes. If you wanted entertainment/news you had to go to the movies or listen to the radio. Obviously movies became a lot more popular since they appealed to visual senses rather than just audible.

Glad you brought that up. Yes, the news. And they'd give a cliffhanger of a movie coming out the following week. My mom would say its basically she'd go and be there like 4 hours.

No one is addressing piracy via telesync/camcorders?

Hell, I go to the movies only once or twice a year if its something I can't wait to see...

Poor people go to movies all the time.

They're called "kids."

They have very little in accessible assets and disposable income of their own.

I saw the inflation adjusted list a few years back. Gone with the Wind was #1 by Rod Allen's country mile.

^^ this.

What makes movies like Star Wars (1979) more impressive than Avatar is I paid $2.50 maybe to see it.

A friend told me Avatar in an IMAX Theater was like $13.00 even at matinee times.

So Star Wars would have needed to sell 3x as many tickets to beat Avatar.

I with they used a system that tracked tickets sold and not box office gross/net.

I dunno, when I was a kid I and my friends used to go to the movies all the time, popcorn was a quarter, tickets were under $3, and back then they still used to show some of the old cartoons before the feature.

Now the kids I know go only when a really big deal movie is coming out (Harry Potters, Cars 2, Toy Story 3, etc.) because it's so expensive, and let's face it....people have a hard enough time paying mortgages and CC payments to just hand out $12 for tickets, and $5 for a drink and $3 for popcorn/candy.

When I was a kid my movie money was "Dad, can I borry 2$ to go to the movie". I never got allowance or job so I had no disposable income. But back then it was all baseball and football outside. Occasional movie at night.
