Best of luck to him, but I don?t think he?ll even be drafted. Worth a UFA flier though, who knows. I think this is a win for us, he peaked his freshman year and I didn?t want him back next year anyways, he would likely be holding back Heyward and Jefferson.

Not really a win IMO, I dont see how this makes us better. I assume he got some feedback on his draft grade and that changed his mind. I don't blame him though, had some big moments in his career

His best year was his freshman year, no? Stranger things have happened, I guess, but he doesn't appear to be an NFL talent. Hope he took advantage of that scholarship.

As short as careers are for NFL running backs, sticking around an extra year in college taking a pounding while making $0 is almost always a bad idea, especially someone who would be a 5th year senior. Good luck to him.

I think heyward is a better back. I could have seen Dantonio sticking to LJ next year out of sheer loyalty/seniority and reduce heywards role big time.

I completely agree and said pretty much the same thing in a few of the game threads this season. Heyward is better in every aspect. He runs better (and tougher), has better hands and blows him away when it comes to blocking and picking up blitzes. I also think Jefferson got too many carries - Heyward would be a big part of a drive then they'd sit him for 3 possessions. I wish LJ nothing but the best and have no ill will for him - it's not his fault the coaches kept going to him.

I also said I'd be happy to be proven wrong next year, but I don't think it's likely we'd get anything close to the LJ we saw 3 years ago and I worry the staff would make him the default #1 TB because of the press, draft projections, 3yr old game film, etc.

so I read that LJ is planning to play in the bowl game. Is that right and if he does, does that preclude him from getting that 5th year if he wants it? Does the same rule apply in football where if you don't hire an agent and go undrafted or don't like your draft position, you can go back to school and play out your eligibility?

If he plays in the Bowl game he probably would have been in too many games for the season to qualify as a redshirt, and his eligibility would be exhausted anyway.

I think he does have an NFL body/style and could do just fine as a back up and make a roster. At this point hes damned if you do damned if you dont. Stay and you split carries and arent going to increase your stock regardless. Unfortunately he needs to go now comming off a season he was banged up all year. A team like the lions for example...pick him up in like the 5-6th round...cut Blount. Makes perfect sense for that offense...a banger for short yards that can catch the ball out of the backfield and spell Kerryon on running downs.

but if he doesn't play in the bowl game, my understanding is he can get the redshirt under this new rule, correct?

That sounds right. I have to believe the coaching staff held him out of some games with that in mind...probably for his benefit.

yeah, looking back it's interesting to note the difference in how Lewerke's injury was handled vs. LJ Scott's. Both had injuries key to performance in their respective positions (Lewerke's shoulder and Scott's ankle). All along we were hearing reports of LJ's progress and seeing him dressed to play on the sidelines but being held out - and it's not like any of those games were in hand this year while Lewerke was being sent out obviously well below 100%. The timing of them (lewerke's being much later) certainly had something to do with it but I wonder if the competence of the backups entered into the calculus and how impactful that was.

I still think Lewerke should have been shut down well before he was, allowed to heal and recover for next season.

Sounds like Scott had a poor plan...if he was planning on going pro why the fuck would he care about his red shirt?

Lewerke was awful before his injury...a good coaching staff would have pulled him and got Lombardi reps much sooner.

The thing I would worry about with scott is him playing not to get hurt since it's his 5th year and worrying too much about draft status. Heyward at full go would be better than tentative LJ

Lewerke wasn't awful before the injury and what most people don't seem to realize, perhaps due to their frustration at Lewerke playing injured for too long, is that Lombardi stinks. He's better than an injured Lewerke but not much - he's big and somewhat mobile but he has no touch or accuracy. He has some tools and upside but right now, a healthy Lewerke is clearly the better choice. Everyone was so happy to see MD make a change that they gave Lombardi huge benefit of the doubt. It took awhile for people to come around, though most did - he's not good.
